Diego Sebastián Schwartzman (born August 16, 1992 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine tennis player .

Career

Schwartzman started playing tennis when he was seven. Schwartzman has played regularly on the ATP World Tour since the 2013 season . For example, he reached the round of 16 in Buenos Aires , where he failed in two sets to Tommy Robredo . In Acapulco he made it into the main draw via the qualifying rounds, but failed there in round one due to the eventual winner of the tournament Rafael Nadal . Until his tournament victory in Los Cabos in 2019, he won all of his titles on clay.

In 2014 he made his debut for the Argentine Davis Cup team .

Personal

Schwartzman is Jewish and the son of Ricardo and Silvana Schwartzman. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the Holocaust, his Polish great-grandfather on his mother's side was taken to a National Socialist concentration camp on a train. The coupler connecting two cars on the train broke and his great-grandfather and others escaped. His great-grandfather brought his family from Germany to Argentina by boat. When they arrived they spoke Yiddish but not Spanish. His father's family emigrated to Argentina from Russia by boat. Schwartzman and his three older siblings - brothers Andrés and Matías and sister Natali - attended a Hebrew school. As a teenager he played tennis at Club Náutico Hacoaj , a Jewish sports club in Buenos Aires that was founded by and for Jews in the early 20th century because Jews were not allowed to join other sports clubs in the city.
