Cecchinato initially played mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Future Tour . He played his first match on the ATP World Tour in May 2013 at the Open de Nice Côte d'Azur in Nice , where he made it into the main draw via qualification. In the first round he met his compatriot Fabio Fognini , against whom he lost 6: 1, 1: 6 and 2: 6 after clearly winning the first set. On August 11, 2013, Cecchinato celebrated his first title on the Challenger Tour. Having entered the tournament with a wildcard , he defeated the three seeded players Jesse Huta Galung , Jiří Veselý and Jan-Lennard Struff on the way . He won the final against his compatriot Filippo Volandri in straight sets.
On July 20, 2016, the Italian Tennis Federation announced that Cecchinato would be suspended for 18 months for match manipulation and betting fraud; in addition, he received a fine of 40,000 euros. However, the decision was revised in the appeal.
In Budapest , where he only reached the peloton as a lucky loser , he won his first ATP title in 2018. He was the ninth player to have achieved this. At the French Open that same year he won his first ever Grand Slam match against Marius Copil , and this after he had already been two sets behind. After victories over the lucky loser Marco Trungelliti as well as Pablo Carreño Busta and David Goffin , who was in 8th position , he defeated the former French Open winner Novak Đoković 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 4), 1: 6 in the quarterfinals , 7: 6 (13:11) and reached the semi-finals. There he had to admit defeat Dominic Thiem in three sets; in the tie-break of the second set he had given three chances to win the set.
