David Goffin (born December 7, 1990 in Liège ) is a Belgian tennis player .

Career

To 2012

Goffin was initially mainly active on the Challenger Tour , but since 2012 he has mainly played on the ATP World Tour . He won his first Challenger title on April 1, 2012 in Le Gosier , when he defeated Mischa Zverev 6: 2, 6: 2. At the 2012 Chennai Open on the World Tour, he won his first victory over a player placed in the top 50 with his win against compatriot Xavier Malisse . He was able to qualify for a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open 2012 as a lucky loser and immediately reached the second round after victories over Radek Štěpánek , Arnaud Clément and Łukasz Kubot . He lost to Roger Federer in four sets despite the 1-0 lead. At Wimbledon he received a wildcard and was in the third round after victories against number 20 seeded Australian Bernard Tomic and against qualifier Jesse Levine . There he was eliminated in three sets against Mardy Fish . At the Olympic Games in London he was defeated in the first round by Juan Mónaco .

Since 2013

In the 2014 season, he managed a series of successes from July when he successively won the Challenger in Scheveningen , Poznan and Tampere . At the following tournament in Kitzbühel , which was part of the World Tour and started in August, he started with a wildcard and also reached the final, which he won against Dominic Thiem in three sets. At his next tournament participation in Winston-Salem , he survived the qualification and was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against Jerzy Janowicz . His strong form continued at the US Open when he first reached the third round. The tournament in Metz followed , where he celebrated his second career title. In the final he defeated João Sousa , whom he had defeated at the US Open shortly before, 6: 4 and 6: 3. After Metz he started thanks to a wild card at the Challenger in Mons , which he won in the final against Steve Darcis . Further victories followed at Goffin's next tournament participation in Basel . On the way to his third ATP final, he beat a top ten player for the first time with Milos Raonic . In the final he had no chance against Roger Federer with 2: 6, 2: 6. Nevertheless, he moved up to 22nd place in the world rankings. At the end of the season, his achievements were named Comeback of the Year by the ATP . He had worked his way up from 111th to 22nd place within the year.

In the 2015 season , Goffin made it to the finals in both 's-Hertogenbosch and Gstaad . He was defeated by Nicolas Mahut in the Netherlands as well as by Dominic Thiem two months later in Gstaad . His best performance in the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2015 was his first round of 16 at Wimbledon . In 2016 he repeated this success not only at Wimbledon , but also at the Australian Open . In Roland Garros he even reached the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Dominic Thiem in four sets. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Goffin was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to Thomaz Bellucci . In October he finally made his first final of the season on the World Tour when he moved into the final against Nick Kyrgios in Tokyo . In the second final of his career at a tournament in the World Tour 500 category , Goffin suffered a three-set defeat after leading the set. Although he missed the direct qualification for the World Tour Finals , he came as a substitute for Gaël Monfils during the group stage but was still used. Against Novak Đoković he had no chance in his final debut with 1: 6 and 2: 6. He finished the season in the world rankings at his interim career high of eleventh place.

At the start of the 2017 season , he made it to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open . There he failed in three sets against Grigor Dimitrov . In February he reached the ATP final in Sofia , where he again lost to Dimitrov this time in two sets, and in Rotterdam , where Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated him in three sets. In the world rankings, after the two tournaments, he was listed for the first time in tenth and thus in the top ten in the world. During the French Open Goffin injured himself in his third round match against Horacio Zeballos , whereupon he had to give up this injured. It was only in mid-July that he played his next tournament in Umag and thus missed the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon . In the further course of the season he made it to the round of 16 for the first time at the US Open , in which he was beaten by Andrei Rublev in three sets. In October he first won the tournament in Shenzhen when he defeated Oleksandr Dolhopolow in the final in three sets, and a week later the tournament in Tokyo , his first title win in a World Tour 500 tournament. In the final he defeated Adrian Mannarino 6: 3 and 7: 5. For the ATP Finals he was finally qualified as the seventh player and survived the group phase in which he beat Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal . In the semifinals he defeated Roger Federer in three sets, but suffered a three-set defeat in the final against Grigor Dimitrov. After the tournament he reached his career high with seventh place in the world rankings. In 2017 he was named Belgium's Sportsman of the Year for his successes . The 2018 season, on the other hand, was without any major successes for Goffin. At the French Open and the US Open he was in the round of 16, but he did not reach any finals at the World during the season for the first time since 2013. In September he ended the season prematurely due to an elbow injury.

2019 began for Goffin with a success in doubles: at the season opener tournament in Doha he and Pierre-Hugues Herbert won the doubles competition with a final victory against Matwé Middelkoop and Robin Haase , which was Goffin's first double title on the World Tour. In individual, he recorded third round participation in the Australian Open and the French Open in the first half of the season , he also reached the semifinals at the ATP tournaments in Marseille and Estoril . In Halle he finally made it to the finals, but he was left behind in two sets against Roger Federer. In Wimbledon he moved shortly thereafter for the first time the quarterfinals. Against Novak Đoković he managed only six game wins in three sets, so that Goffin lost the game significantly. In Cincinnati he reached the final of a Masters for the first time in August. There Daniil Medvedev defeated him in two sets. At the immediately following US Open , he was eliminated in the second round, as in the two previous years. In 2020 he reached the quarter-finals at the ATP Cup with Belgium at the start of the season , while at the Australian Open after a defeat against Andrei Rublev, as in 2019, he did not get past the third round. At the time of the season break in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Goffin was listed in tenth place in the world rankings.

Davis Cup

In 2012 he was appointed to the Belgian Davis Cup team for the first time . In Belgium's 2014 relegation game in the Davis Cup world group , David Goffin played a key role in the 3-2 victory over Ukraine with two individual victories. With the Belgian team he reached the final the following year , in which they lost 3-1 against Great Britain . Although Goffin defeated Kyle Edmund in five sets in the first singles , after a victory Andy Murray in the second singles the British equalized and went after a 3-1 win in doubles, in which Andy and Jamie Murray won against Steve Dacis and David Goffin , with 2: 1 lead. Goffin lost to Andy Murray in three sets in the following individual. In 2017 the Belgians made it to the finals again. Goffin had won his two individual games both in the quarter-finals against Italy and in the semifinals against Australia . Also in the final Goffin prevailed in both singles (against Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ), but Belgium lost the final against France with 2: 3, as the other games were lost.
