Mikhail "Misha" Alexandrovich Zverev ( Russian Михаил Александрович Зверев ., Scientific transliteration Mihail Zverev Aleksandrovič , German transcription Mikhail Zverev * 22. August 1987 in Moscow , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a German tennis player .

biography

Mischa Zverev was born in Moscow in 1987 . The family moved to Hamburg when he was four years old. Since his early youth he was coached by his father Alexander Swerew , who played for the Soviet Union in the Davis Cup from 1979 and reached 175th place in the world rankings in 1985. His mother Irina Swerewa, b. Fatejewa, was also a professional player and reached in 1993 the 380th place in the world rankings. Mischa and his younger brother Alexander Zverev began their club careers in the youth of Uhlenhorster HC . In 2004, Mischa Zverev was ranked 3rd in the youth world rankings.

His biggest single successes on the ATP Tour so far were his quarterfinals in Bangkok 2006, where he defeated the former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round , and in Newport 2007. He also reached the third round at Wimbledon 2008 (by giving up Ferrero) .

In June 2008, Mischa Zverev won the Gerry Weber Open 2008 alongside double partner Michail Juschny . The opponent in the final was the Indian-Czech duo Leander Paes / Lukáš Dlouhý .

In October 2008 he and Michail Juschny again won the double finals in Tokyo against Paes and Dlouhý, this time 6: 3, 6: 4.

At the tournament in Moscow in October 2008, Zverev reached the semifinals against Marat Safin , to which he could not compete due to illness. This was his greatest individual success so far.

2009

Zverev started 2009 in 80th position. At the Australian Open, he failed in three sets against Juan Martín del Potro . A short time later he reached the quarter-finals in Zagreb after three-set successes over Andreas Seppi and Victor Hănescu ; because of bronchitis he had to give up in the quarterfinals. Two weeks later, Zverev played his way back to the last eight in Marseille; there he failed on top seeded Novak Đoković (3: 6, 3: 6).

At the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, Zverev failed in round one. In Indian Wells he awarded two match points against the Austrian Daniel Köllerer .

At the Masters tournament in Rome, Zverev made it to the quarter-finals through qualification (including after defeating the then number 7 in the world, Gilles Simon ); there he failed with 6: 7 and 2: 6 to Roger Federer . After the tournament he was in the top 60 in the world.

At the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf in May 2009 he played alongside Nicolas Kiefer for the first time . The double contributed three wins to make it into the final. There they also won the last game, which became insignificant after the defeats in the two singles.

A week later Zverev competed in Roland Garros , where he had to give up in the first round at 7: 6, 5: 7, 0: 1 due to stomach problems against the Italian Potito Starace . At the lawn tournament in Halle / Westphalia he reached the quarter-finals after victories over Joseph Sirianni and Tomáš Berdych , where he failed in two sets at the eventual winner Tommy Haas . A strain in the thigh meant that Zverev had to give up in the first round of another Wimbledon preparatory tournament in s'Hertogenbosch.

In Wimbledon, Mischa Zverev played himself after defeating Dmitri Tursunow in round two, where he failed 6: 4, 6: 7, 6: 3, 6: 7, 0: 6 to compatriot Philipp Petzschner .

Zverev was appointed to the German Davis Cup team for the first time due to his good performances for the quarter-final match against Spain. He played alongside Nicolas Kiefer the doubles against Feliciano López and Fernando Verdasco , which they lost in four sets.

Zverev then played the two clay court tournaments in Stuttgart and Hamburg. In Stuttgart he defeated the top seeded French Gilles Simon in round two, before he had to admit defeat to his compatriot and eventual winner Jérémy Chardy in the quarterfinals . Placed in 16th position, Zverev had a bye for the first round in Hamburg. So his first appearance came in round two, in which he had to admit defeat Simon Greul in three sets . In the double competition, Zverev played with Michael Stich thanks to a wildcard ; However, they failed in round one on the Swedish-Australian doubles Aspelin and Hanley.

In the following six tournaments, Zverev was always eliminated in round one before reaching the second round in Bangkok, Thailand, at the end of September. A short time later, he broke his right wrist at the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai in his first-round match against Fernando González . This put him out of action for the remainder of the 2009 season.

2010

Zverev made his comeback in January at the ATP tournament in Brisbane . Here he was eliminated in round one against the Australian Carsten Ball in two sets. In another preparatory tournament for the Australian Open, he entered the qualification of Sydney . There, too, he failed in the first round. At the Australian Open , the Pole Łukasz Kubot was drawn to him. The first major appearance of the year ended with a clear three-set defeat in round one.

Two more first round defeats in Zagreb and Rotterdam followed before Zverev reached the semi-finals at the tournament in Marseille after victories over David Guez, Tommy Robredo and Guillaume Rufin. There he then failed at the eventual tournament winner Michaël Llodra in two sets. Zverev then played the US hard court tournaments in Delray Beach , Indian Wells , Sunrise and Miami . In Delray Beach and Sunrise (Challenger) Zverev reached round two - in Indian Wells he failed in round one to Nicolás Almagro , in Miami he lost the first round of the qualification against the Austrian Stefan Koubek . Several first round defeats followed, u. a. in Munich against Kevin Anderson and in Roland Garros against Nicolas Mahut . Since Zverev could not defend the points from the quarter-finals participation in the master's tournament in Rome from the previous year, he fell to 139th place.

Starting with a wildcard , Zverev reached the quarter-finals in Halle / Westphalia as in the previous year; he suggested u. a. the number 15 in the world, Jürgen Melzer , in three sentences. Two weeks later, Zverev failed in the first qualifying round for Wimbledon to compatriot Andre Begemann . Due to the poor ranking position, Zverev was now often in action on the ATP Challenger Tour . At a Challenger tournament in Oberstaufen, he reached the quarter-finals in early July. In mid-July he reached two in Stuttgart thanks to a wildcard round, where he failed to Jürgen Melzer. Again with a wildcard, he lost in his home game in Hamburg in the first round against the eventual winner Andrei Golubew in two sets.

Even in the following Challenger tournaments, Zverev never got past the second round. In qualifying for the US Open , he lost in round one against the Canadian Milos Raonic . At the Challenger tournament in Genoa, he reached the quarter-finals. Two weeks later he survived the qualification at the indoor tournament in Metz; there he reached after victories over Horacio Zeballos , Nicolas Mahut, Jarkko Nieminen and by giving up Richard Gasquet the first final of his career on the ATP World Tour , in which he was defeated by Gilles Simon in two sets. Participation in the finals earned him 37,900 euros and 162 world ranking points. Zverev received a special exempt for the PTT Thailand Open the following week. There he lost his opening match against Benjamin Becker. Two weeks later, he received a wild card to qualify for the Shanghai Masters Tournament . He survived this without any problems and after victories over Serhij Stachowskyj and Nikolai Dawydenko played his way up to the round of 16 and thus back into the top 100 of the world rankings. In the following match, however, he was clearly defeated by the Argentine Juan Mónaco in two sets. At the end of October 2010, Zverev was able to qualify again for an ATP main field in Montpellier , where he met Nikolai Dawydenko again after his first round win over Robin Haase ; he lost in straight sets. He finished the year as number 82 in the world. He earned $ 318,805 with a match balance of 13:18.

2011

Zverev celebrated his first victory of the year on the ATP tour in Indian Wells , where he defeated Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden in two sets. In round two came the close against Tommy Robredo . There followed four first round defeats until he was able to stop the series in Belgrade with a three-set win over Dudi Sela .

At the Challenger tournament in Geneva in November he reached the final and was defeated there by the Tunisian Malek Jaziri . During 2011, some back problems put Zverev out of action.

2012

In March 2012 he lost the final against David Goffin from Belgium at the Challenger tournament in Le Gosier . Zverev secured a place in the main field of the French Open through qualification , then retired in the first round against the French Julien Benneteau . In October he reached the finals in Sacramento , a Challenger class tournament, where James Blake had to admit defeat. A week later, Zverev made it to the final at another Challenger, but missed the title in Tiburon , losing to Jack Sock . In November, he and Alex Kuznetsov won the doubles competition at the Knoxville Challenger tournament .

2013

In January 2013 he moved into the finals of the Challenger tournament in Maui , where he was defeated by Go Soeda from Japan. At the Masters 1000 from Indian Wells , Zverev reached the second round in March, in June he reached the quarter-finals at the lawn tournament in Halle , but clearly lost out against Roger Federer and got the maximum penalty with 0: 6, 0: 6. In September he advanced to the second round in Kuala Lumpur , where he lost to Jürgen Melzer. In doubles he won alongside Alex Kuznetsov in the final of the Challenger tournament in Dallas against Tennys Sandgren / Rhyne Williams .

Zverev had to pause temporarily in 2013 due to a torn patellar tendon.

2014

In the summer of 2014, he had an operation on his left wrist. He never made it into the main field at any ATP tournament.

2015

Together with his brother Alexander, he moved into the final in the double competition of the Munich tournament , which they lost to Alexander Peya / Bruno Soares . In singles, he was eliminated from the eventual tournament winner Andy Murray in the last sixteen at the same event . In June he reached the quarter-finals at the Stuttgart tournament (three-set defeat against Marin Čilić ), in September he advanced to the second round in Metz (three-set defeat against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ) and shortly afterwards he was in the last 16 players in Kuala Lumpur ( Two set defeat against Feliciano López ). In October, Zverev was eliminated from the Valencia tournament in the quarter-finals in straight sets against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut .

2016

In the singles, Zverev reached the round of 16 of the tournament in Marseille in February , but had to give up in the duel with David Goffin in the second set. In April he won the Challenger tournament in Sarasota (victory in the final against Gerald Melzer ), in Kitzbühel in July he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Dušan Lajović , the following month in Los Cabos he was also in the last 16 (defeat in three sets against Ivo Karlović ) . At the US Open - for the first time since 2011 - Zverev gained the right to start a main field of a Grand Slam tournament in qualification and defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round before he failed in the second round to Jack Sock. In September he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Shenzhen tournament against Richard Gasquet, at the Shanghai Masters in October Zverev met world number one Novak Đoković in the quarter-finals after victories against Nick Kyrgios and Marcel Granollers, and almost managed to surprise. He won the first set and was only three points away from winning the match in the second. Ultimately, however, he was defeated by Đoković 6: 3, 6: 7 (4: 7) and 3: 6.

In doubles he reached the finals of the Montpellier tournament with his brother Alexander ; in Munich and Halle the two made it to the quarterfinals.

2017

The season began for Zverev with the greatest success of his career. At the Australian Open he reached the second round after victories over Guillermo García-López , John Isner and Malek Jaziri . There he defeated world number one Andy Murray surprisingly clearly with 7: 5, 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 4, where he mostly played serve and volley . In the quarter-finals he was eliminated in three sets (1: 6, 5: 7, 2: 6) against Roger Federer. Until then, reaching the third round at Wimbledon 2008 was his best performance in a Grand Slam tournament. At the same time, this was the first victory of a German in a Grand Slam tournament against a current number 1 since Boris Becker's 1995 victory against Andre Agassi at Wimbledon . With this result, he rose to 35th place in the world, his best placement. After a series of early defeats, Zverev was able to make it into the final at the clay court tournament in Geneva , in which he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka . At the tournament in Wimbledon , Zverev moved back into the third round for the first time in nine years. Roger Federer defeated him in the second duel at Grand Slam level within six months again in three straight sets. Nevertheless, Zverev was able to mark a new career record with world ranking position 28.

2018

At the Australian Open , Zverev gave up in the first round due to an injury, which is why he was fined (45,000 US dollars) - due to a new, tightened regulation of the Grand Slam organizers from the 2018 season. He was the first player to be affected by the amendment to the rules and appealed against it. In June 2018 he won his first individual title on the tour at the Eastbourne lawn tournament .
