Jarkko Nieminen (born July 23, 1981 in Masku ) is a former Finnish tennis player .

Career

Junior Tour

Nieminen started playing tennis at the age of four. In 1999 he defeated Kristian Pless from Denmark in the final of the Junior Grand Slam tournament of the US Open . With this success he made it to 9th place in the junior world rankings that year.

2000 to 2004

Nieminen turned pro in 2000. He finished 2001 in the top 100 for the first time after a solid season in which he won four Challenger titles (Wolfsburg, Tampere, Córdoba and Maia). In December 2001 he was also the first Finn to reach (since Leo Palin in Sofia) an ATP final: As a qualifier, he reached the final of the ATP tournament in Stockholm, in which he was finally defeated by the Dutchman Sjeng Schalken .

In 2002, Nieminen became the first Finn to make it into the top 50 in the world. This year he reached the finals in Estoril and Mallorca .

In 2003 he moved Munich into its fourth ATP final. He finished the year in the top 40.

In 2004 he finished in the top 100 for the fourth year in a row, despite having been sidelined for three months due to an injury. He reached three semi-finals (Sydney, Dubai and Beijing).

2005 to 2009

In 2005, Nieminen won a Challenger title in Prostějov (Czech Republic). At the Australian Open , he made it into the third round after winning over Davide Sanguinetti and Paradorn Srichaphan . There he had to give up because of an abdominal muscle strain at the score of 3: 6, 2: 5 against Roger Federer . At the French Open in Roland Garros, Nieminen surprisingly defeated superstar Andre Agassi , who was suffering from a back injury, and made it to the second round. There he was defeated by Igor Andreev in four sentences. At Wimbledon , Nieminen lost his opening game against Tim Henman in just five sets. He also reached the semifinals in Munich, Stuttgart, Bangkok and Tokyo. His best performance of the year was the quarter-finals of the US Open , where he lost to Lleyton Hewitt in five sets.

The 2006 season should be Nieminen's best season so far. In the first month he managed a 9-2 match record with a quarter-finals in Adelaide and his first title on the ATP Tour in Auckland . There he clearly defeated Mario Ančić 6: 2, 6: 2 in the final . He also reached round three at the Australian Open , in which he was defeated by David Nalbandian . At the ATP Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells, he reached his first quarter-finals in a tournament of this category. On April 17th he made it into the top 20 in the world for the first time. In the quarter-finals of Barcelona Nieminen led against defending champion Rafael Nadal 6: 4 and 4: 1, but could not win the match in the end. When Nieminen was eliminated in the first round at Roland Garros, the grass season began for him. He reached the second round in Halle and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, in which he lost to Nadal. Back on clay, he reached 13th place in the world ranking position on July 10th after moving into the semi-finals in Båstad , where he lost to Tommy Robredo . At the US Open, Nieminen lost his opening game against Xavier Malisse . In Stockholm he reached the final and lost there to James Blake . He also reached the semi-finals in Rotterdam and Munich. This year Nieminen recorded a positive match balance on all surfaces: 30:14 on hard court, 16: 8 on clay, 5: 3 on grass and 4: 3 on carpet. This season was also his financially best with $ 894,565 in prize money.

In 2007 he ended the year in the top 30 in the world for the third time in a row, after reaching the finals in Basel , among others . He also celebrated the first double title of his career in Mumbai at the side of the Swede Robert Lindstedt .

In 2008 he reached the final in Adelaide, but this time he was defeated by Michaël Llodra in straight sets. He was also able to top his round of 16 from last year at the Australian Open. He made it to the quarter-finals where he was stopped by Rafael Nadal. He represented Finland at the Olympic Games in Beijing , but lost there in the first round against the Swede Thomas Johansson . At the US Open , alongside Robert Lindstedt, he achieved his best double result in a Grand Slam tournament to date by reaching the round of eight.

The year 2009 began for the Finn with a final in Sydney , where he lost out to David Nalbandian . At the Australian Open he had to give up in the first round against Paul-Henri Mathieu because of a groin injury. Although he won the doubles tournament in San José alongside Rohan Bopanna in February, injuries continued to plague him. After many first round defeats, he had to give up again at the Challenger tournament in Tunis in the semifinals against Gastón Gaudio and then undergo wrist surgery. His three-month forced break, through which he missed the French Open, among other things, he ended at the tournament in New Haven with a first round defeat. At the US Open he reached the second round, where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . After that, Nieminen reached the quarter-finals in Stockholm. After that he played mainly on the Challenger level, where he was able to celebrate a tournament victory in Jersey . At his home tournament in Helsinki, Nieminen lost in the quarterfinals against his young compatriot Henri Kontinen. At the end of the season, Nieminen reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Salzburg after victories in the quarterfinals against Daniel Köllerer and in the semifinals against Karol Beck, in which he was defeated by Michael Berrer . But with the final, Nieminen was able to secure his top 100 position at the end of the season.

2010 to end of career in 2015

At the ATP tournament in Gstaad , Nieminen and his Swedish partner Johan Brunström won his second title in doubles against the Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares . In 2012, Nieminen won his second ATP title in Sydney after 2006 against the French Julien Benneteau . In the same tournament he came in doubles with Matthew Ebden in the final, but the two lost to Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan . He won his third double title in Munich in 2013 with the Russian Dmitri Tursunow against the Cypriot-American doubles Marcos Baghdatis and Eric Butorac .

In the first round of the Sony Open 2014 , Nieminen won against Bernard Tomic in 28 minutes and 20 seconds. That was the fastest victory in the history of the ATP Tour . In the same year he won his fourth doubles title with his compatriot Henri Kontinen in Kitzbühel against the Italian Daniele Bracciali and the Kazakhs Andrei Golubew . He won his fifth and final doubles title in 2015 in Buenos Aires , this time with the Brazilian André Sá , the opponents were the Spaniard Pablo Andújar and the Austrian Oliver Marach .

At the If Stockholm Open 2015 he ended his career after defeats in the singles and doubles competition.
