Yuri Iwanowitsch Schchukin ( Russian Ю́рий Ива́нович ́у́кин , English transcription: Yuri Schukin ; born June 26, 1979 in Kislowodsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Kazakh tennis player of Russian origin.
life and career Shchukin achieved his greatest successes on the Challenger Tour . In total, he was able to win 24 titles in his career, eight in singles and 16 more in doubles. On the World Tour , reaching the finals in Warsaw in 2008 with Nikolai Dawydenko was his best result. They were defeated by the Polish local heroes Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in three sentences. He made his Grand Slam debut in 2001 at the Australian Open , where he was eliminated in the opening round.
Since he saw no chance for himself to be called into the Russian Davis Cup team , Shchukin took Kazakh citizenship in summer 2008 (just like his compatriots Andrei Golubew and Michail Kukuschkin ). In September 2008 he was able to play for Kazakhstan for the first time against the Philippines .
Shchukin reached the highest positions of his career with positions 119 in the single and 117 in the double world rankings. He played his last professional match on the tour in March 2013 in Hamburg and has not been in the world rankings since March 2014.
