Santiago Ventura Bertomeu (born January 5, 1980 in Castellón de la Plana ) is a former Spanish tennis player .
life and career
Santiago Ventura started playing tennis with his father at the age of six. Between 1996 and 1998 he was able to celebrate successes in several junior tournaments in Europe both in singles and doubles.
Since 1996 he has also played in the adult segment at satellite tournaments in Spain and Portugal and was first included in the tennis world rankings in October 1997 . In April 1999 he won his first title and then entered the top 500 in the world rankings. In September 1999 he qualified for the first time in Seville for a Challenger tournament; he also now played in future tournaments.
In 2001, Santiago Ventura decided to pursue a career as a professional tennis player, and in September 2001 he celebrated his first title in future tournaments. In 2002 and 2003 a few more future and satellite titles followed. At Challenger tournaments, however, Ventura has not yet made it past the quarter-finals.
In May 2004, Santiago Ventura achieved the sensation out of nowhere: In Casablanca , he tried to qualify for an ATP tournament for the third time in his career and made it into the main draw. There he marched through to the final, where he defeated the top 50 player Dominik Hrbatý, who was number 1, in three sets . In the world rankings, he then made a jump from 316th place to 138th place. A month later, he tried to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon , but was eliminated in the second round. One month later, Ventura qualified for the second time for an ATP tournament in Båstad . After a first round win over Jonas Björkman , he lost to Rafael Nadal in the second round . At the following ATP tournament in Kitzbühel he was even directly qualified and was able to defeat a top 100 player in the second round with Albert Montañés before he was eliminated by Feliciano López . In August 2004, Santiago Ventura was able to win his first Challenger title in Freudenstadt . He defeated, among other things, the then seventeen year old Novak Đoković . After he had reached another Challenger final in Barcelona in October 2004 , he was listed in the top 100 of the world rankings for a few weeks for the first time, but fell back to 104th by the end of the year.
Nevertheless, he was qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open 2005 and was able to prevail in the first round in five sets against his compatriot Álex Calatrava . In the second lap, however, David Nalbandian, who was in 9th position, was the final destination. As a result, he was now back in the top 100 and was now able to take part in ATP tournaments regularly. His greatest success was reaching the round of 16 in Costa do Sauípe . It went even better in doubles: Together with David Ferrer , he won the ATP tournaments in Viña del Mar and Acapulco in February 2005 and has now also entered the top 100 in the doubles world rankings. In the individual, however, he could not repeat his success in Casablanca last year and so fell back in the ranking in May 2005. The first round at Wimbledon in June 2005 was his last participation in the ATP tournament in 2005. He was also unsuccessful at Challenger tournaments in the further course of the year, only in doubles he was able to win a title in Geneva .
The year 2006 was also very unsuccessful for Santiago Ventura: With only two ATP tournaments he could only reach the second round once. Even at Challenger tournaments, he never got past the second round this year. Since September 2006 he has not played any tournaments due to injury and therefore fell back to 423th place in the world rankings. In doubles he won a title in Barletta this year , but fell out of the top 200 at the end of the year.
Success returned in 2007: after winning a future title in February 2007, Santiago Ventura received a wildcard for the Valencia ATP tournament in April 2007 . And he took advantage of this: After a first round win over the top 50 player Florian Mayer , Ventura could only be stopped by Nicolás Almagro in the semifinals in three tight sets . This and a second round participation in Estoril two weeks later were the only ATP appearances of Ventura this season; but he was able to reach a total of five finals on the Challenger Tour, of which he won two in Milan and Montevideo . As a result, he returned to the top 100 at the end of the year. In doubles, he was able to win a total of nine Challenger tournaments this year, most of them alongside Marcel Granollers .
In 2008, Santiago Ventura played more ATP tournaments again. In Viña del Mar he made it to the semi-finals and in March 2008 he reached 65th place, his best position in the individual world rankings. In doubles, Ventura was able to win a title in Casablanca with Albert Montañés and reached the final in Costa do Sauípe . In addition, he was able to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon together with Marcel Granollers , where they were defeated by the Bryan brothers, who were placed in position 1 . As a result, Santiago Ventura achieved his best mark in the double world rankings in July 2008 with 37th place. At the Challenger level, he was not as successful this year as in 2007; the only high point was the tournament in Bucharest in September 2008, where Ventura won both the singles and doubles competition (with Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo ).
In March 2009, Santiago Ventura was able to reach two more Challenger Finals in Rabat and Barletta , but he lost each. In doubles, however, he won both tournaments together with Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo as well as four other Challenger tournaments in the further course of the year. Another highlight of the season was the ATP tournament in Bucharest , where Ventura reached his fourth ATP semifinal as a qualifier after victories over Igor Andrejew and Alberto Martín , where he lost in three sets to the eventual tournament winner Albert Montañés . In the world rankings, Ventura remained very constant this year in singles between rank 108 and 132, and in doubles between rank 47 and 83.
At the beginning of 2010, Santiago Ventura celebrated his fourth ATP double title in Chennai together with Marcel Granollers . In February 2010 he moved into the quarter-finals in Buenos Aires as a qualifier after defeating Victor Hănescu and then climbed back into the top 100 of the individual world rankings for a few weeks for the first time in almost two years. In doubles, the second ATP title of the season followed in Munich in May 2010 together with Oliver Marach . They fended off five match points in the final and ultimately won the match 16:14 in the match tie-break . Other highlights of the year were reaching the round of 16 at the French Open (alongside Nicolás Almagro ) and reaching the finals at the ATP tournament in Bucharest (with Granollers). In addition, he was able to win a total of five Challenger tournaments in doubles this year; in singles he reached a final in Zagreb , but fell out of the top 200 at the end of the season due to numerous first round defeats.
In 2011 Ventura only took part in three ATP tournaments. So he started with Marc López in Marseille and with Michael Kohlmann in Casablanca , but failed in the first round. His last tournament was the Masters in Madrid , for which he and his partner Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo received a wild card. They could reach the last sixteen. Ventura then announced his retirement from professional tennis.
particularities
Together with Yahiya Doumbia (1988 in Lyon ), José Francisco Altur (1989 in San Marino ) and Nicolás Lapentti (1995 in Bogotá ), Santiago Ventura is one of four players who managed to immediately win the tournament on their ATP debut. What he has in common with his compatriot Altur is that this first was also the only single ATP title in his career.
