Janko Tipsarević ( Serbian Јанко Типсаревић ; born June 22, 1984 in Belgrade ) is a former Serbian tennis player .
Career
youth
He started playing tennis at the age of six and joined the New Belgrade Tennis Club at the age of eight , he could have trained in Miami or Barcelona. In 2001 he won the Junior Australian Open , reached the quarter-finals at the Junior French Open and finished the year in second place in the junior world rankings. As an amateur, he also won the Future tournament in his hometown of Belgrade.
As early as 2000 he played in the Davis Cup team (with Nenad Zimonjić, among others ). With his help and a victory over Monaco, Serbia , which was still fourth class at the time, managed to return to third class. He was the youngest Yugoslav Davis Cup player of all time (until 2001 there was still a Yugoslav national team).
2002-2004
In 2002 Tipsarević turned professional, winning two future tournaments in Mexico. The following year he achieved his first win at Challenger level in Zell and his first win against a top 100 player in Torrance . There he defeated Dmitri Tursunov , who was number 91 in the tennis world rankings at the time. In 2004 the breakthrough should be achieved, but after a balance of 2: 9 from the first eleven Challenger encounters, he even flew out of the top 200. Tipsarević recovered and was able to win two Challenger tournaments by the end of the year. He also celebrated promotion to the second highest group with the Davis Cup team.
2005-2008
In 2005 he tried more and more at ATP tournaments. His greatest successes were entering the top 100 for the first time and reaching the third round of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. In the last 13 games, however, there were only two wins. At the end of the year he was only number 140 in the world.
The following year he won four Challenger titles and ended the year in the top 100 for the first time (65th place). This made him the second best Serb behind the rising Novak Đoković .
2007 was similar, he won a Challenger tournament in Zagreb and was able to place in the top 50 for the first time. One of the highlights was his appearances at Wimbledon . After two five-set wins against Alexander Peya and Florent Serra , he met the then number 6 in the world rankings, Fernando González , whom he also defeated in five sets. Tipsarević was the first player since Jan Kodeš in 1974 to get three five-set wins in a row at Wimbledon. In the last sixteen he lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero . Another exclamation point was his entry into the semifinals of the Moscow ATP tournament for the first time .
At the very first Grand Slam tournament in 2008, Tipsarević caused a sensation again when he only had to admit defeat 8:10 in the fifth set against the number 1 at the time, Roger Federer , in the third round . The rest of the season was largely constant, with a few outliers up (including the quarter-finals in Miami and the second round in Wimbledon ). At the end of the year Tipsarević was among the 50 best in the world for the first time.
2009
After a disappointing season and slipping to 79th place, he again played a Challenger tournament in Mons . There he won without losing a set against strong competition like Alejandro Falla , Xavier Malisse or Serhij Stachowskyj . Two weeks after this tournament victory, he reached his first final on the ATP Tour in Moscow, which he lost in three sets against his temporary doubles partner Michail Juschny . At the tournament in Valencia he reached the semi-finals again, but lost to Jürgen Melzer . With this "final sprint" he landed again among the top 50 in the world rankings.
Things didn't go really well on the ATP Tour until October, but then he celebrated a historic victory with the Serbian team. With Tipsarević, Viktor Troicki , Nenad Zimonjić and Arsenije Zlatanović , Serbia won the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf for the first time . In his games against Stanislaw Wowk , Francesco Piccari and Philipp Kohlschreiber he stayed without losing a set.
2010
Tipsarević moved between 35th and 50th place this season, highlights on the tour were the finals in 's-Hertogenbosch and the win over Andy Roddick in the second round of the US Open .
The season went better with the Serbian team. After the surprise success at the World Team Cup last year, the Davis Cup was won this year . Especially in the 3-2 victory against the Czech Republic in the semifinals, Tipsarević proved to be the match winner by winning both singles against Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek . At the final in Belgrade, where, according to the operator, more than 100,000 tickets could have been sold, he was replaced by Viktor Troicki after his relatively clear defeat against Gaël Monfils , who finally scored the decisive point against Michaël Llodra .
2011
This year Tipsarević achieved the breakthrough to become an extended world leader. He reached the final in Eastbourne as well as in Delray Beach , added the quarter-finals at the Masters tournament in Miami and the semi-finals in Montreal . Tournament victories in Kuala Lumpur and Moscow brought him to 9th place, his highest position in the world rankings to date. Next to Đoković and Troicki, Tipsarević is the third Serb among the 20 best tennis players. And finally, at the end of the year, he defeated his compatriot Novak Đoković for the first time at the World Tour Finals .
2012
At the first tournament of the year in Chennai he reached the final, in which he had to admit defeat to the aspiring Canadian Milos Raonic in three sets. In the double finals, he secured the first double title of his career with his partner Leander Paes . At the Australian Open he was eliminated in the third round against Richard Gasquet . At the following first round encounter in the Davis Cup , Tipsarević, with his two individual victories, had a large share in making it to the quarter-finals, where the Serbian team was eliminated 4-1 against the Czech Republic. He was able to celebrate another success at the Masters in Madrid , where he was defeated by Roger Federer in the semifinals. It was only the second semifinal participation in a tournament in the Masters series. A week later he was eliminated from the Masters in Rome after a bye in the second round against Stanislas Wawrinka . This was followed by the second victory for Serbia after 2009 at the World Team Cup . With a victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber, he secured the title for his country before the final double. At the French Open and the Queen's Club , the round of 16 ended. For Wimbledon he lost his third round game against Michail Juschny in four sets after clear victories over David Nalbandian and Ryan Sweeting . At the clay court tournament in Stuttgart , where he as the top seeded player also had a bye, he was in an ATP final for the second time this year after victories over Steve Darcis , Björn Phau and Thomaz Bellucci . There he defeated the number two seeded Argentine Juan Mónaco 6: 4, 5: 7 and 6: 3. For Tipsarevic it was the first participation in the finals of a clay court tournament. A week later he was back in a final on clay, in Gstaad he was defeated by the Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in three sets.
2013
At the first tournament of the year in Chennai, like last year, he was in the final, defeating the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets. At the Australian Open he reached the round of 16, in which he gave up in the second set against Nicolás Almagro at the score of 2: 6 and 1: 5. In his next four tournaments Tipsarević never got beyond the first round, he lost all opening games against poorly placed players. He only found his way back to victories at the Miami Masters in March, only failing in three sets against Gilles Simon in the round of 16 . In the remaining 17 tournaments that he played that year, he was able to celebrate 10 wins. At the last tournament in Valencia in October 2013, he injured his knee. He finally ended the year at position 53 in the world rankings.
2014-2019
Tipsarević did not play a single professional match in 2014. He has not been in the double world ranking since March 2014 and in the single world ranking since the end of October 2014. The following year he played nine tournaments in which he occasionally scored victories in the first round. In 2016 he won the Challenger tournament in Qingdao and finished the year at 144th place in the world rankings in singles. The 2017 season was even more successful, in the world rankings he has now placed himself in 55th place. He won individual titles on the Challenger Tour in Bangkok , again Bangkok , Qingdao and Anning . In 2018 he dropped out of the ranking list in singles because he did not take part in a single tournament. He only made his comeback at the 2019 Australian Open .
After the Davis Cup final round in Madrid in November 2019, he ended his career.
Personal
His father Pavle is a professor, his mother Vesna a housewife. He has a younger brother named Veljko. Janko Tipsarević is also known to the international press for his love of classical literature. He has the quote "Beauty will save the world" from The Idiot by Dostoevsky tattooed in Japanese characters on his left forearm. In March 2009, however, he announced that he no longer wanted to read as much as it was affecting his concentration. In 2006 he successfully completed a sports management degree at the University of Belgrade .
Janko Tipsarević has been married to Biljana Šešević since July 4, 2010. The couple has had a daughter since 2014.
