Defending champion in the singles was Rafael Nadal , who had won the tournament five times in a row between 2005 and 2009. He won the title again this year, in the final he defeated his compatriot Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-0. This was Nadal's first title of the season and his 37th career title. In doubles, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić were able to successfully defend their title. In the final they won against Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirny , after they had to give up the game in the second set at 6: 3, 2: 0 due to injury. It was their 19th joint title.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,227,500 euros; the total financial liabilities were EUR 2,543,750.
The qualification took place from April 9-10, 2010. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
