Ernests Gulbis (born August 30, 1988 in Riga , Latvian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Latvian tennis player .

Private

Gulbis comes from a wealthy Latvian family. His father Ainārs is a businessman and his mother Milēna is an actress. As a child, Ernests appeared with her in a Latvian television series, directed by his maternal grandfather, Uldis Pūcītis - he is considered Latvia's greatest film and theater maker . The family is also very sporty. Like his grandfather Alvils Gulbis , his father was a basketball player. His grandfather was able to celebrate winning the European championship with ASK Riga .

Gulbis has a total of four siblings. Two of his younger sisters, Laura and Monika, also play tennis.

On November 3, 2017, Gulbis married his girlfriend Tamara. In March 2018, they became parents of one child.

Because of his style of play and appearance on and off the field, he has often been compared to the former world number one Marat Safin .

Career

youth

Gulbis was trained from the age of 12 by the former Davis Cup team boss of the German team, Niki Pilić , in his tennis academy in Munich. In 2004 he turned professional and played his first futures tournaments, a year later he was able to celebrate his first tournament victory at this level in Friedberg and was in action for Latvia in the Davis Cup for the first time. At that time, the tennis budget of the Latvian Tennis Association was just 7,000 euros.

2006-2009

In 2006 he achieved his first challenge tournament victory (in Eckental ) and really attracted attention for the first time by reaching the semifinals of the ATP tournament in St. Petersburg . With a wildcard at the start, his way to the semi-finals led over three Czech players ( Vik , Dlouhý and Hernych ); there he had to admit defeat to Mario Ančić . This result catapulted him from position 204 to 156.

After two Challenger tournament victories at the beginning of 2007, he was in the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time, after which Gulbis tried more and more at ATP tournaments; but rarely got past the first round. Only at the US Open did he show his talent again and after a clear three-set win against the then top 10 player Tommy Robredo he reached the round of 16, which he won against Carlos Moyá 5: 7, 2: 6, 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6 lost.

2008 was the big breakthrough for Gulbis. He regularly reached the second round at the ATP tournaments and had a positive 24-22 balance at the end of the year. The greatest success this year was undoubtedly reaching the quarter-finals at the French Open and his first tournament victory on the ATP Tour in doubles with Rainer Schüttler in Houston .

In 2009 Gulbis' career experienced its first stagnation. He traveled for months without a coach after separating from the Austrian Karl Heinz Wetter at the beginning of the year. 13 first round defeats caused a relapse in the rankings from 53rd place to 90th, even though he was able to beat his former training partner and third in the world rankings Novak Đoković in his first game in Brisbane . Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate his second tournament victory in doubles with Dmitri Tursunow in Indianapolis . There was an upturn only with the engagement of the Argentine Hernán Gumy after the US Open. The former professional was the last coach of Marat Safin who referred him to his friend Gulbis. The quarter-finals in Tokyo and later in St. Petersburg were first evidence of a new seriousness in the Latvian.

2010-2011

In February 2010 he won his first title on the ATP World Tour in Delray Beach , where he defeated the Croatian Ivo Karlović, seeded at No. 2, in two sets with 6: 2 and 6: 3. This makes him the first Latvian to win a title on the ATP tour. Gulbis caused a big surprise at the Masters in Rome , where he defeated Roger Federer in the second round and only just had to admit defeat to eventual winner Rafael Nadal in the semifinals . A week later, however, he lost to Federer in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters . These good performances were reflected in the ranking and Gulbis moved into the top 30 for the first time. Due to the very good performance during the clay court season, the expectations for the French Open were very high, but Gulbis had to give up in the first round against Julien Benneteau due to an injury. This injury also forced him to skip the entire lawn season including Wimbledon . It was only in Los Angeles during the North American hard court season that Gulbis got back into the tour, but could no longer build on the form in the spring and a number of first and second round defeats followed (except for a round of 16 in Cincinnati ). This tendency continued in autumn and apart from a quarter-finals in Bangkok and a round of 16 in Paris , Gulbis could hardly succeed - but he ended the season in 24th place.

At the beginning of 2011 he reached an ATP semifinal in Sydney again, but surprisingly at the Australian Open he failed in round one to Benjamin Becker . Nevertheless, at the beginning of February he achieved his best position in the world rankings with 21st place. Gulbis then suspended a few tournaments to recover from a respiratory infection. In addition, his coach Hernán Gumy could no longer accompany him to tournaments for private reasons. In the spring, he decided not to defend his title in Delray Beach and instead started in Dubai , where he was eliminated in the second round - and promoted him from the top 30. Even at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , Gulbis did not penetrate far into the field. In the meantime, he was looked after by Darren Cahill's Adidas team. He also had to skip the clay court season for the most part and thus could not defend the good performance from the previous year, which meant a crash in the ranking: In mid-May he was only in 85th place. In addition, he did not reach the Grand Slam tournaments in Roland Garros and in Wimbledon at the smaller tournaments in the Queen's Club or in Atlanta the second round. Gulbis thus continued his negative trend in major tournaments: his last match win at a Grand Slam was at Wimbledon in 2009. The Latvian only succeeded in turning the tide in Los Angeles : in the quarterfinals he beat Juan Martín del Potro , in the semifinals the local hero Alex Bogomolov junior and in the final he was able to prevail against the American number one Mardy Fish and win his second ATP title. Gulbis announced at the end of the year that he will be working with Gumy again. Before that, the former Argentine top player Guillermo Cañas had looked after him since Wimbledon .

2012-2014

Stoke Park 2012

In 2012 Gulbis was eliminated from the first round of tournaments. But was able to win five of six singles and two of three doubles for Latvia in the Davis Cup continental group II , but Ukraine won in the last game and thus rose to continental group I. At ATP Delray Beach , Gulbis reached the quarter-finals. Before Roland Garros, Gulbis changed coach. Since then he has worked with the Austrian Günter Bresnik , who once looked after Boris Becker, among others. Bresnik was the captain of the Austrian Davis Cup team for many years.

In Wimbledon Gulbis reached the second round by defeating the top seeded Tomáš Berdych in three sets. He was then defeated in five sets to the Pole Jerzy Janowicz . In July he failed again in round two in Umag . A week later, Gulbis reached the quarter-finals of an ATP tournament in Gstaad for the second time a year. Immediately afterwards Gulbis reached the second round again in Kitzbühel . In August, Gulbis reached the third round in Winston-Salem after qualifying. At the US Open Gulbis reached the second round again. He had previously defeated Tommy Haas in five sets.

After a knee injury, he entered the Erste Bank Open in Vienna with a wildcard. He lost to Janko Tipsarević in the second round. Gulbis achieved the most world ranking points (48) in 2012 at the Bauer Watertechnology Cup 2012 on the ATP Challenger Tour, where he only failed in the final against Daniel Brands . Because of a tonsillitis Gulbis could not play the remaining two Challenger tournaments. He decided to skip the 2013 Australian Open in order to have enough time to prepare for the new season. At the end of the year it was in 136th place.

In 2013 Gulbis started his season on the ATP Challenger Tour without much success, but was then able to qualify for the tournament in Rotterdam . There he failed in the second round at the eventual winner Juan Martín del Potro . At the Open 13 Gulbis lost in the second round against the eventual finalist Tomáš Berdych. The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Gulbis won for the second time in 2010 after recovering from qualification. With the points (262) for this tournament victory, Gulbis made up 42 places in the world rankings and reached the top 100 for the first time since July 23, 2012 with rank 67. At the subsequent Indian Wells Masters , Gulbis reached as a qualifier with wins over Feliciano López , Janko Tipsarević and Andreas Seppi made the last sixteen. There he was defeated by Rafael Nadal 6: 4, 4: 6 and 5: 7 after a series of 13 won matches .

Gulbis then played the tournaments in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Munich and Rome, but never got past the second round. In Munich he narrowly failed at the eventual tournament winner Tommy Haas. In Rome he lost again to Rafael Nadal in three sets with 6: 1, 5: 7 and 4: 6 after qualifying. In Stuttgart he failed again in the second round to Tommy Haas . After his fourth title win on the World Tour in St. Petersburg , Gulbis climbed to 27th place in the world rankings. He defeated Guillermo García-López in the final 3: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 0.

The 2014 season began Gulbis in Doha, where he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. At the Australian Open, Gulbis retired after a four-set win in the first round over the Argentine Juan Monaco in the second round. In February Gulbis won his fifth ATP title in Marseille. Set in third place, he lost only one set in the entire course of the tournament and defeated the local heroes Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in two sets in the semifinals and finals . While preparing for the 2014 French Open , Gulbis won his sixth individual title at ATP level. In Nice he defeated Federico Delbonis in straight sets.

From 2015

In 2016, Gulbis announced the separation from his coach Günter Bresnik, as he devoted too much time to Dominic Thiem at Gulbis' discretion and he wants a coach who is 100 percent there for him.
