Gabriel Moraru (born January 28, 1982 in Constanța ) is a Romanian tennis player .
Career
Moraru played his first tournament in 2000 when he received a wild card in doubles from the tournament management in Bucharest . In his ATP World Tour debut, he lost in the opening round. Until 2004 he was able to work his way up the world rankings . During this time he won five titles on the ITF Future Tour ; in doubles another nine. In addition to futures, he also played occasional tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour during this time , where, however, just like on the World Tour, he often benefited from wildcards from Romanian tournament organizers. 2004 in Brașov he made his first entry into a Challenger semi-finals in singles. A little later in 2005 he reached his career high there with number 234. Thanks to his four Challenger titles and his greatest success - reaching the semi-finals of the World Tour tournament in Bucharest in 2005 in doubles - he also achieved his career record there with 125th place.
In the period that followed, his ranking deteriorated again, in individual he did not make it beyond the Challenger semi-finals three more times and only won two more futures until the beginning of 2008. But then he managed to win another five titles within a year, making him back into the top 300. In doubles, he fell out of the top 500. After the lack of better results, Moraru ended his career in 2012. In addition to four challengers in doubles, he also won 15 futures in singles and another 18 in doubles. At tournaments of the ATP World Tour he remained without a win in two appearances in singles, in doubles he was able to win three times in five tournaments. In a Grand Slam tournament , he never made it over the first hurdle of qualification.
After his playing days, he worked as a trainer for compatriots like Marius Copil , Irina-Camelia Begu and Ana Bogdan . He is currently working at Ilie Năstase's tennis academy as head coach. He also looks after the Romanian national team for under 16s.
