Ana Bogdan (born November 25, 1992 in Sinaia ) is a Romanian tennis player .

Career

Bogdan started playing tennis at the age of four and was a successful junior player. In 2008 she won the final against defending champion Kurumi Nara with the Osaka Mayor's Cup, one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world. After moving into the individual semi-finals at the 2009 Australian Open junior women's tournament, she climbed to second place in the junior world rankings. As a reward for her promising results, she was presented with numerous wild cards in 2009 , including qualifications for the WTA tournaments in Madrid , Budapest and Osaka , in which she failed to make it into the main draw. Bogdan then had problems confirming her success on the junior tour with the professionals.

After several years in which she almost exclusively competed in small tournaments of the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in Turkey, she moved out of the qualification in Bad Gastein for the first time in the second round of a WTA tournament in 2014 . She benefited from the injury-related abandonment of her opponent Ajla Tomljanović ; in the second round she was defeated by Karolína Plíšková in straight sets. At the end of the year she also reached the semi-finals at the WTA Challenger in Taipei after beating Zheng Saisai after qualifying and thus rose to the top 200 in the world.

In 2015 she started in Melbourne for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but lost in the first round. After further unsuccessful attempts to qualify at smaller WTA tournaments, she was able to win three ITF tournaments in the $ 25,000 category Mamaia , Sofia and Bath in the second half of the year . In the following season she surprisingly made it to the semi-finals at the WTA tournament in Florianópolis , where she achieved her greatest success by far in the second round against top seed Jelena Janković . At the US Open 2016 , Bogdan kept her form and qualified for the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. After a victory at the beginning against her compatriot Sorana Cîrstea , she had to admit defeat to another teammate with Monica Niculescu . In 2017 she also managed to jump from qualification to the main field at the Australian Open and French Open , but there she lost in round one to Jelena Wesnina and Ons Jabeur . At her home tournament in Bucharest she reached her second WTA semi-final after defeating Anastasija Sevastova , in which she was beaten by Julia Görges in three sets.

At the beginning of the 2018 season, she surprised in Melbourne by reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. After two further semi-finals at smaller tournaments in Monterrey and Bogotá , where she was defeated by the eventual winners Garbiñe Muguruza and Anna Karolína Schmiedlová , as well as her first entry into the second round of the French Open , she achieved her highest position in the world rankings with 59th place . After seven first round defeats at the start of the 2019 season, she temporarily left the Top 100 again, but was able to qualify for the fourth time in a row by reaching the second round at the US Open and her biggest tournament victory so far at the ITF tournament in Dubai in the final against Darija Snihur , fight back into the ranking of the 100 best players.

Bogdan played for the Romanian Fed Cup team for the first time in 2018; She has won one of three matches in singles and doubles so far.
