Ons Jabeur (born August 28, 1994 in Ksar Hellal , Monastir ) is a Tunisian tennis player .

Career

Ons Jabeur, who began to play tennis at the age of three under the guidance of her mother, already had great success as a junior. In 2010 she reached the final of the junior women competition of the French Open for the first time , which she lost in straight sets to Elina Switolina . In 2011 she came back to the final and won the tournament after a two-set win over Monica Puig . This made her the first North African woman to win a competition in a Grand Slam tournament . She then climbed to second place in the junior tennis world rankings and reached the semi-finals again in the US Open women's junior competition .

In 2008 she took part in a tournament of the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour for the first time, in 2009 she made it to the final for the first time and in 2010 she won her first two professional titles. In 2012 she made her debut in Doha in the main draw of a WTA tournament after she had received a wildcard from the organizers , but was already defeated by Virginie Razzano at the beginning . At the French Open in the same year she was allowed to start as the title holder of the junior tournament with a wildcard in the qualification, in which she failed in the second round. As a representative of a small sporting nation, the ITF awarded her a starting place in the main field of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she lost in three sets to Sabine Lisicki in the first round .

In 2013, Jabeur won two ITF $ 50,000 tournaments in succession in Fukuoka and Kurume and another at the end of the season in Saguenay and reached her first quarter-finals in a WTA tournament in Baku , where she also started with a wildcard However, she had to give up against Magda Linette due to an injury . The following year she was able to qualify for the main round of a Grand Slam tournament in New York for the first time, but failed to kick off in three sets to Andrea Petković . Jabeur found it difficult to confirm her strong results in the junior division on the women's tour. After a weak 2015, Jabeur started the new season in 2016 with two tournament wins in the $ 25,000 category, followed by another in the $ 50,000 category in front of a home crowd in Tunis , but she did not manage to win a single peloton over the course of the season WTA tournament. She also remained without a win in the qualifying rounds of Wimbledon and the US Open . For the Olympic tennis tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 , she was again granted special starting authorization, but as in 2012, she lost in the first round to Darja Kassatkina .

At the beginning of 2017 she was able to reach a WTA quarter-finals in Taipei after a long time, in which she was only defeated in the tie-break of the third set against the eventual winner Switolina. Afterwards she came out of the qualification in Dubai for the first time in the second round and reached the round of 16 in Charleston as a lucky loser . At the French Open , too , Jabeur was eliminated in the final round of qualification, but subsequently moved into the main field due to a rejection and moved there after a second-round win over Dominika Cibulková , her first win against a top 10 player, as the first Tunisian ever and first Lucky Loserin has entered the third round for 21 years, in which she was eliminated by Timea Bacsinszky . With another second round participation at the US Open , she was able to end the season in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time.

After a poor start to 2018 with nine defeats from ten games, she only got back on track on grass and won her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Manchester . For this victory, the organizers of Wimbledon awarded her a wild card, which Jabeur used to move into the second round for the first time in London after a success over Viktorija Golubic . She had her first breakthrough on the WTA tour at the end of the season when, coming out of qualification after victories over Sloane Stephens and Anastasija Sevastova , she stormed into the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, where she was beaten by Kassatkina in three sets. Nevertheless, Jabeur's performance remained unstable in 2019. Her best result of the season she achieved in Eastbourne when she reached the semi-finals, but she suffered an injury to her right ankle in her win against Alizé Cornet and could not play against Angelique Kerber the following day. At the US Open , she achieved her best Grand Slam result of the year with the third round.

In 2020 she finally advanced to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, among other things after defeating Caroline Wozniacki, as the first Arab tennis player ever, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Sofia Kenin . Due to the success she managed to jump into the top 50 in the world. Subsequently, she was eliminated in the second round of Dubai after awarding a match ball against Simona Halep and came in Doha after a triumph over Karolína Plíšková for the first time in the quarter-finals, which she lost in two tiebreaks against Petra Kvitová . When the season ended, she had her highest world ranking position to date with 39th place.

In 2011, Jabeur made her debut for the Tunisian Fed Cup team in a 2-1 win over Egypt . Since then she has played 50 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 37. With 28 wins in singles, she holds the Tunisian Fed Cup record.
