Anastasija Sevastova (born April 13, 1990 in Liepāja ) is a Latvian tennis player .

Career

2005 to 2009

Sevastova, who began playing tennis at the age of six, played the sport as a hobby for a long time and therefore did not play any significant junior tournaments. Instead, she took part on the ITF tour for the first time shortly after her 15th birthday and won her first two professional titles that same year.

In 2007 Sevastova made her debut in Istanbul after successfully qualifying for the first time in the main draw of a WTA tournament and immediately moved into the second round after defeating Nastassja Jakimawa , in which she was defeated by Aljona Bondarenko . After winning two ITF titles in the $ 25,000 category in 2008, she made her debut in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon , but was eliminated in her first official tournament on grass in the first round. The following year she won her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Johannesburg and subsequently reached the peloton for the first time from qualification at the 2009 French Open , where she failed at the start to Melinda Czink . With her improved ranking, Sevastova was directly in the main round at the US Open for the first time and immediately moved into the second round after defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn before she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova . In Guangzhou , Sevastova scored her first WTA quarter-finals towards the end of the season and ended the year in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time .

2010 and 2011

After her first WTA semifinal participation in Monterrey , where she landed her first win over a top 10 player at the start against Jelena Janković , Sevastova reached the third round of a Premier Mandatory tournament for the first time in Indian Wells in 2010 and then in Oeiras with a final success her first WTA title through Arantxa Parra Santonja . She celebrated her second big success of the season when she reached the quarter-finals in Beijing , in which she was only stopped by Li Na . Then she was listed for the first time in the top 50 of the world rankings. After Sevastova was able to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open 2011 and only lost to Caroline Wozniacki , she achieved her current highest ranking with 36th place. In the further course of the season, however, they conceded a total of eleven first-round defeats and ended the season just under the top 100 in the world.

Resignation and comeback in 2015

Due to injuries Sevastova could only intervene at the beginning of the clay court season in 2012, but she only won two ITF tournaments by the end of the year. At the WTA level, however, she did not have a single main field success, so that she fell far behind in the world rankings. Despite reaching the quarter-finals in Pattaya in early 2013, the 23-year-old announced her retirement from professional tennis in May after losing in the first qualifying round in Miami due to recurring injuries.

But in early 2015 she made her comeback. She received a wild card for the ITF tournament in Sharm el-Sheikh and won straight away, as did in Trnava afterwards . Then she won two more ITF titles in tournaments of the $ 25,000 category and was in Florianópolis in July again in the main draw of a WTA tournament, where she immediately reached the semifinals, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Teliana Pereira . At the end of the season, she surprised at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow by moving into the quarter-finals from the qualification, in which she again had to admit defeat to Kuznetsova in three sets.

After reaching the second round in Melbourne as a qualifier, she returned to the top 100 in the world rankings. Then she first came to the final of the highly endowed ITF tournament in Trnava , which she also lost her first two WTA finals since 2010 in Mallorca against Caroline Garcia and Bucharest against Simona Halep . Sevastova celebrated her greatest success since the comeback at the US Open , where she eliminated world number three Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round and advanced to the second round , in which she was again defeated by Caroline Wozniacki. Despite four defeats in a row at the end of the season, she was able to finish the season in the top 50 in the world for the first time since 2010.

Career highlights: 2017 and 2018

In 2017 Sevastova reached the semi-finals for the first time in Dubai and at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid , where she lost to the eventual winner Simona Halep after defeating Karolína Plíšková in the second round . In Mallorca she then achieved her second triumph on the WTA tour after seven years; in the final she was able to beat Julia Görges in three sets. By moving into the third round of Cincinnati and her first Grand Slam quarter-finals at the US Open , where she was only stopped by Sloane Stephens in the tiebreak of the third set, she climbed into the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time and qualified thus for the WTA Elite Trophy 2017 in Zhuhai. After two wins in the group stage against Sloane Stephens and Barbora Strýcová , she got into the semifinals there, where she failed in two sets against Julia Görges.

Sevastova started the 2018 season with a semi-final in Brisbane and a round of 16 participation in Indian Wells . She then reached the semifinals in Charleston for the first time and was in Mallorca for the third time in a row in the final, which she lost to Tatjana Maria . She then celebrated her third WTA title in Bucharest after defeating Petra Martić in the final before reaching the quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. After two opening defeats at the French Open and at Wimbledon , Sevastova achieved her best career result at a Grand Slam tournament by making it into the semifinals at the US Open . There she defeated Elina Switolina in the fourth round and Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals two top 10 players in a row before she was eliminated by Serena Williams without a chance. Then she won her first final in a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category in Beijing after a semi-final victory over Naomi Osaka , but she was defeated in the final to Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets. Due to the success, Sevastova moved up to position eleven in the world rankings, her best position to date. At the end of the season, she was in a semi-finals for the seventh time this year at the Kremlin Cup and qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy for the second time in a row after 2017 . After a win over Zhang Shuai and a loss to Garbiñe Muguruza, this time she failed in the group stage.

Since 2019

In 2019 Sevastova started the new season with a round of 16 at the Australian Open and tried to get into the top 10 of the world rankings. Although she also achieved the fourth round in Paris , in which she had to admit defeat to Markéta Vondroušová , and celebrated her fourth WTA title in Jūrmala after a final win over Katarzyna Kawa in front of a home crowd, she did not come close to that in the second half of the season Results of the previous year and slipped back in the world rankings. Nevertheless, as in the previous year, she was voted Sportswoman of the Year in Latvia.

After a weak start to the 2020 season, in which she has so far been without a win on the WTA Tour, she fell out of the top 40 in the world for the first time since 2016.

Fed Cup

Sevastova made his debut for the Latvian Fed Cup team in the 3-0 defeat against Georgia at the age of 15 . Since then she has played 36 singles and doubles games for her country, of which she was able to win 24 (individual balance 17: 6). Together with Jeļena Ostapenko , she holds the Latvian record for the most individual Fed Cup wins.
