Caroline Garcia (born October 16, 1993 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye ) is a French tennis player . At the side of Kristina Mladenovic , she won the doubles competition at the French Open in 2016 and won the Fed Cup with France in 2019 .

Career

Junior career

Garcia, who started tennis at the age of seven, was one of the best of her year among the juniors. In 2011 she reached the semi-finals at the junior women's competitions of the Australian Open , French Open and Wimbledon , at the US Open she even made it to the final, but lost to Grace Min . Due to the constant results, she rose to fifth place in the junior women's tennis world rankings at the end of 2011.

2009 to 2013

Garcia gained his first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2009 and reached her first final in a tournament in the $ 25,000 category the following year in Aschaffenburg . In 2010 she made her debut in the qualification of the indoor tournament in Paris , for which she received a wildcard , also for the first time on the WTA tour, but was eliminated in the first round. In the same year Garcia, also equipped with a wildcard, was allowed to start in the qualification of the French Open ; there too she remained without a victory.

In early 2011 she received a wild card from the French Tennis Association for the main field of the Australian Open , where she immediately reached the second round after an opening win over Varvara Lepchenko . She succeeded in the same at the French Open , in which she even won the first set against Marija Sharapova in round two , but was ultimately defeated in three sets. In 2012, Garcia's performance initially stagnated and she could not record any further success in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament. During the entire season, she did not get past two semifinals on the ITF tour and could only win one game in the main draw at WTA level. In 2013 she made it into the top 100 in the world rankings after winning her first ITF title in Cagnes-sur-Mer . In Paris and London Garcia was in the second round and ended the season in the top 100 in the world for the first time.

2014 and 2015

In 2014 Garcia won her first WTA title in singles and doubles in Bogotá . In the final of the individual competition, she prevailed against Jelena Janković and achieved her first win against a top 10 player, in doubles she triumphed alongside Lara Arruabarrena . At the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid, she then advanced as a qualifier to the quarterfinals, in which she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska in three sets, and reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . By reaching the quarter-finals in Wuhan towards the end of the season, she was listed in the top 40 of the world rankings for the first time at the end of the year. In addition, she was in doubles with alternating partners in three other finals, including in Wuhan, but they all lost. The following year, she reached in Acapulco and Monterrey, initially two consecutive WTA finals, but they both lost to Timea Bacsinszky . In Madrid and Cincinnati Garcia was then in the third round and triumphed at the end of the season in Limoges for the first time in a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series after a straight two-set win in the final against Louisa Chirico . In 2015 she formed a duo with Katarina Srebotnik . Together they stood in five WTA finals, one of which they could win in Eastbourne . Over the entire year, she achieved four top 10 wins in singles, three of them against Ana Ivanović and one against Petra Kvitová .

Career highlight in doubles: 2016

In the world rankings, however, she was only able to climb to the top in the following season, when she reached the semifinals in Dubai and later in Monterrey and then won her next two WTA titles in Strasbourg and Mallorca . In the finals she prevailed against Mirjana Lučić-Baroni and Anastasija Sevastova . In 2016 Garcia also began her extremely successful double collaboration with her compatriot Kristina Mladenovic . After initially losing two finals in Sydney and Dubai , the two won three times in a row on clay courts in Charleston , Stuttgart , Madrid and then crowned their collaboration with a triumph in front of their home crowd at the French Open , where they faced Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena in the final Wesnina prevailed. Then they reached the final of the US Open , but lost there, as well as in the final in Beijing Lucie Šafářová and Bethanie Mattek-Sands . At the end of the year, the two shared second place in the double world rankings and thus qualified for the WTA Championships 2016 in Singapore, where they were stopped again in the semifinals by Šafářová and Mattek-Sands.

At the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Garcia beat Teliana Pereira at the start of the individual competition before knocking out Johanna Konta in the second round . The result of the French Open winners in women's doubles was disappointing , where Garcia and Mladenovic seeded number two failed in round one against the Japanese duo Misaki Doi and Eri Hozumi . In the mixed competition , Garcia even topped the seeding list together with Nicolas Mahut , but in this discipline, too, the surprising end against the Brazilian pairing Teliana Pereira and Marcelo Melo followed at the beginning . already at the beginning. Despite the disappointing performances at the Olympics, she was able to advance to the third round for the first time at the US Open and in Beijing and finish the year in the top 30 in the world for the first time after reaching the final in Limoges again, but this time against Jekaterina Alexandrowa lost. In 2016, Garcia and France reached the Fed Cup final for the first time since 2005 . In the final against the Czech Republic , which the French lost 3-2, Garcia won both singles games against Petra Kvitova and Karolína Plíšková , but lost the decisive double together with Mladenovic against Plíšková and Barbora Strýcová . She was subsequently honored with the Fed Cup Heart Award for her commitment . In addition, she chose the WTA together with her doubles partner Kristina Mladenovic as WTA “Doubles Team of the Year” .

Individual career highlight: 2017 and 2018

After moving into the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2017 , Garcia and Mladenovic ended their collaboration on the grounds that they want to focus more on their individual careers from now on. In fact, Garcia played her best season by far in 2017. At the French Open , she came to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and had to admit defeat there only Karolína Plíšková. She then made it to the second round for the first time at Wimbledon and made it to the quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. But she experienced the high point of her individual career in China , where she was the first player to win the premier tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing , defeating three top 10 players with Dominika Cibulková , Elina Switolina and Simona Halep . In the final of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open 2017 she prevailed against Ashleigh Barty , in the final of the China Open she landed her only success so far over Simona Halep. With the two titles Garcia made it into the top 10 of the tennis world rankings and thus, although she was now hopelessly beaten in the so-called WTA Race, she still qualified for the WTA Championships 2017 in Singapore. There she even reached the semi-finals after two preliminary round victories over Switolina and Caroline Wozniacki , in which she finally lost to Venus Williams in three sets.

At the beginning of 2018, Garcia initially built on the good performance of the previous year and reached the round of 16 in Melbourne and the quarter-finals in Doha and Dubai . She had her strongest phase of the year on clay court, where she reached the quarter-finals in Rome , the semi- finals in Stuttgart and Madrid and the fourth round at the French Open . In September she then achieved her highest world rankings in fourth place. However, Garcia did not manage to defend her points from the second half of the previous year, so that she fell out of the top 10 by the end of the calendar year. With her sixth WTA individual title in Tianjin , where she landed her last triumph over a top 10 player in the final against Plíšková, she at least qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, but was eliminated there after a preliminary round victory over Aryna Sabalenka and lost to Ashleigh Barty in the group stage.

Since 2019

In 2019 Garcia struggled with a form crisis that worsened over the course of the year. Only in smaller WTA tournaments, such as in Strasbourg , where she was in the final for the second time since 2016 and lost to Dajana Jastremska , and in Nottingham , where she celebrated her seventh WTA individual title after winning the final over Donna Vekić , she was able to win draw attention. With only four main draw victories after Wimbledon , she slipped further in the ranking and only barely entered the top 50 in the world for the winter. Garcia's highlight of the season was defeating Australia in the Fed Cup . Although she lost her singles match against Ashleigh Barty with 0: 6, 0: 6, but in the reunited doubles with Kristina Mladenovic she achieved the decisive point for triumph against Barty and Samantha Stosur .

Since her Fed Cup debut for France in the 4-1 playoff success against Kazakhstan in 2013, she has played 25 singles and doubles for her country, of which she won 18 (individual balance 11: 6).
