Saint-Germain-en-Laye [sɛ.ʒɛʁmɛ.ɑ.lɛ] is a French municipality with 44,753 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . The municipality is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the capital of the canton of Saint-Germain-en-Laye .
It was created with effect from January 1, 2019 as Commune nouvelle by amalgamating the previously independent municipalities of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Fourqueux , which have since had the status of Communes déléguées . The administrative headquarters are in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Saint-Germain-en-Laye is located about 20 kilometers northwest in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Paris in the northwest of the department.

Saint-Germain-en-Laye is nicknamed the “largest open-air shopping center west of Paris” with more than 800 shops, most of which are in the historic center.
Saint-Germain-en-Laye is the headquarters of Ford France or FMC AUTOMOBILES, Pall France, the French branches of Bose Corporation and Cargill , among others . The Seine-Aval sewage treatment plant des Syndicat interdépartemental pour l'assainissement de l'agglomération parisienne (SIAAP), the waste water association for the greater Paris area, has been in operation since 1940 and treats an average of 1.5 million m³ of water per day.
Agriculture plays only a very minor role in the municipality's economy.

Local public transport
Most of the connection from Saint-Germain-en-Laye to Paris is carried by the RER A line des Réseau express régional d'Île-de-France , which has a terminus in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The Châtelet-Les Halles stop in the heart of Paris can be reached in just over half an hour.
Via a line of the Grande ceinture Ouest with stops in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Fourqueux, operated by SNCF , passengers can change trains at Saint-Lazare station in Paris.
The public transport within the municipality is operated by regular buses from the company Transdev under the name Résalys .
Transdev bus routes connect Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Fourqueux with other municipalities in the department such as Cergy , Conflans-Sainte-Honorine , Mantes-la-Jolie , Poissy or Versailles .
The SNCF railway line from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Le Havre crosses the area of the commune without a stop.
Road traffic
The A 14 autoroute crosses the municipality's area largely underground. Saint-Germain-en-Laye is connected via exit 6a at Chambourcy.
Saint-Germain-en-Laye is connected by two national roads . The Route nationale 13 crosses the municipality from west to east and leads to Mantes-la-Jolie in the west and to Paris in the east. The Route nationale 184 , however, has a north-south orientation and connects the municipality in the north with Cergy-Pontoise via Conflans-Sainte-Honorine .
Several départementales routes cross Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Fourqueux and connect the places with the neighboring municipalities:
- The RD 308 connects Poissy in the west with Maisons-Laffitte in the east
- The RD 157 connects the municipality with Maisons-Laffitte via Le Mesnil-le-Roi in the east
- The RD 190 crosses the center of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and leads to Poissy in the west and Le Pecq in the southeast
- The RD 98 branches off from Route nationale 13 in a southerly direction, crosses Fourqueux and leads to Les Clayes-sous-Bois via Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche.
