history
The area around Achères was not suitable for agriculture because of the frequent flooding of the Seine. Therefore, between 1847 and 1855, a six-kilometer dam was built between the bridge at Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and Poissy to protect against further flooding . Cholera epidemics occurred in 1852 and 1866 .
A marshalling yard was built on the edge of the forest in 1882 , which has since been closed. As a reminder of the importance of freight transport for the community, a colorful freight wagon was set up next to the town hall.
In 1898 and 1899, Achères was the venue for the competition advertised by the newspaper La France Automobile to set the speed record for road vehicles . In several duels between the French Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat and the Belgian Camille Jenatzy , the record was improved from an initial 63 km / h to 105 km / h. Jenatzy was victorious with his electrically powered La Jamais Contente on April 29, 1899.
In 1940 the Seine-Aval sewage treatment plant was built. At that time it was one of the first sewage treatment plants in France and processed wastewater from all over the greater Paris area.
During the riots in France in 2005 , cars were also destroyed in Achères. In November 2005, a kindergarten in the community went up in flames.
