Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat ( 186720 November 1903 in Paris ) was a French racing driver .

life and career

The French nobleman bought a steam carriage from Trépardoux & Cie. in 1895. in Paris, the predecessor company of De Dion-Bouton and thus contested several races advertised as reliability tests in the pioneering era of the automobile . These included the 1895 season Paris-Bordeaux-Paris (later known as I Grand Prix de l'ACF ), 1896 Paris-Marseille-Paris ( II Grand Prix de l'ACF ) and 1897 Marseille-La Turbie and Paris-Trouville . His undoubtedly greatest success with a steam car was winning the raceMarseille–La Turbie 1897 (after Paris to Rouen 1894 the only success of a steam car on one of the great long-distance voyages of the turn of the century) and third place in the 1899 Tour de France for automobiles .

Chasseloup-Laubat was the first to set a recognized land speed record: on December 18, 1898, he achieved a speed of 61.15 km/h in a Jeantaud electric car , the Jeantaud Duc . In a duel with Camille Jenatzy in the spring of 1899, he improved this performance with his vehicle up to 92.16 km/h.
