Colorful New Town Republic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bunte Republik Neustadt ( BRN ) was a micronation in the Äußere Neustadt district of Dresden that existed from 1990 to 1993 . Since then it can be found again as a district festival in June of the following years.

history

For the period from June 22 to 24, 1990, the Colorful Republic of Neustadt was proclaimed and celebrated in a large district festival.

The idea for the Colorful Republic arose one afternoon in the Bronxx, that was a bar on Alaunstrasse, in a chat. We got the thing off the ground within two or three months. "(GREGOR KUNZ, monarch of the 1st BRN)

A "proper provisional government" was formed, led by a " monarch without portfolio" and ministers for "destruction of military strength", "peacocks and other church issues", "unculture and submarines" and others. The government demanded affiliation with the Vatican , issued a government statement and issued decrees . The borders of the Bunter Republik Neustadt were marked with a white line on the street and included the square Bautzner Straße , Königsbrücker Straße , Bischofsweg, Prießnitzstraße. At the entrances there were signs that read:

This is where the free territory of the Colorful Republic of Neustadt begins. "

The campaigners created the “Neustadtmark” as a means of payment . This could be exchanged in exchange offices with the exchange rate to the "Ostmark" of 1: 1 and to the "Westmark" of 1: 2.

On the specially created a flag emblazoned on black-red-yellow background Mickey Mouse head made in a garland of corn as it appears on the national emblem of the GDR was to be found.

The first BRN took place from June 22nd to 24th, 1990. In 1993 the "provisional government" dissolved by going for a swim in the Elbe - an ambiguous ironic reference to the state of the water at the time. The BRN as the district festival of the Outer Neustadt has remained and has increasingly moved away from political content over the years. There were several attempts to organize the event through sponsoring associations. This failed several times, in particular due to the requirements of the city of Dresden and escalations between violent people from the left and right scene. In 2001 and 2002 in particular, there were negative headlines across Germany due to violence. After the BRN was largely peaceful between 2003 and 2006, twelve police officers were injured in nightly riots in 2007.

Since 2002, the district festival has been held without a general organizer, the people and locales involved register individual events with the city using a form.

Due to the previous violence, the BRN was accompanied by an extensive police presence, the festival became more peaceful over the years. Despite numerous commercial organizers, private initiatives without commercial interests were able to survive. These were an essential feature of the BRN from the start. The number of organizers coming from outside is declining, as the requested space is only given to residents.

The valley road in particular is free of commercial offers and traditionally offers activities for young and old children.

The BRN area is closed to moving and stationary traffic during the festival. Along Görlitzer / Rothenburger Strasse there was a regular parade of bizarre, self-made vehicles, accompanied by music and dance, until the 2000s.

In 2006, over 150,000 visitors visited the Neustadt district festival from June 16 to 18.

On December 12, 2010, the BRN Museum was opened in the Neustadt district house, Prießnitzstraße 18. It houses exhibits from 20 years of BRN history.

In June 2015, the 25th street festival since it was founded was celebrated.

In 2016, the BRN received a new security concept in which the intersections had to remain free of stages and sales stands. This relieved the crossroads around Louisenstrasse, which were particularly crowded with crowds on Friday and Saturday evenings, which had barely been used during peak times in previous years. From 2016 onwards, the Roads and Civil Engineering Office was responsible for approving the stands and stages. In the following year, the call for tenders began unusually late, with the registration forms only being available six weeks before the start. In some cases, permits were received only a few days before the start of the BRN and many established, cultural stages were initially not allowed - but commercial stands such as beer trucks were.
