Municipality of Großkrotzenburg

The community Großkrotzenburg is located south of Hanau in the Main-Kinzig district , Hesse , directly on the Main .

The Staudinger coal-fired power station with its cooling towers is a landmark in the eastern Rhine-Main area .

geography

Community structure

Großkrotzenburg officially consists of only one district and only one district (Gmk.-Nr. 60906). In total, around ten percent of the municipal area is water. Großkrotzenburg is known for its bathing lake beyond the municipal boundaries.

Neighboring communities

Großkrotzenburg borders in the north on the city of Hanau , in the east on the municipality of Kahl am Main ( district of Aschaffenburg ), in the south and west on the municipality of Hainburg ( district of Offenbach ).

history

Archaeological finds indicate a settlement of the Großkrotzenburg district since prehistory ( Bronze Age , Urnfield Age , Hallstatt Age , La Tène Period ). Around 100 AD the Romans occupied the area and built the Großkrotzenburg fort in what is today the town center . The Roman imperial border, the Limes , came from the north in Großkrotzenburg the Main, which from here marked the further course of the Limes in a southerly direction, until it was initially the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes from Wörth , later as the Upper German Limes from Miltenberg from Main removed again in a southerly direction. The crew of the fort was the Cohors IV Vindelicorum , who was the only one of the auxiliary troops of the Roman military in Upper Germany to produce building bricks on a large scale in a military brick factory.

The hinterland of the Limes on the right bank of the Rhine was abandoned at the latest in AD 259/60 ( Limesfall ) and settled by Alemanni . The remaining population was subjugated by the Franks around 500 and fell around 850 as a gift to the Count of Hesse. At the end of the 10th century, Emperor Otto's daughter Ida gave the place to the collegiate monastery of St. Peter in Mainz (Petrus pen), in whose possession it remained for more than 800 years until secularization.

During the witch hunts between 1628 and 1630, 90 people were victims of the witch trials in Großkrotzenburg : 69 women and 21 men. 81 names have survived. The natural monument Hexeneiche between Großkrotzenburg and Kahl am Main was damaged by a lightning strike on August 7, 1970; the oak, which was proven in the Thirty Years' War, had to be felled on June 8, 1971. A newly planted oak tree and a memorial stone remind of the witch hunts. Information is available in the Großkrotzenburg local history museum.

In historical documents, the place is documented under changing place names over the centuries : Cruzenburch (1175), Crozenburc (1282), Crocenburg trans Mogum (1292) and Gross Crotzenberg (1602).

Großkrotzenburg is one of the small number of 31 municipalities that were not changed in the course of the regional reform in Hesse . The community still consists of a single village and a single district, as it has historically grown.

The former Hessian member of the state parliament Aloys Lenz (CDU) proposed the incorporation of Großkrotzenburg into Hanau in 2018 and is seeking a petition for this. The background to this is that, since the Staudinger power plant was largely shut down, the municipality, as by far the largest business tax payer, has been heavily in debt and, despite tax increases, a balanced budget can no longer be achieved. In addition, Hanau is to leave the Main-Kinzig district in 2021 and Großkrotzenburg would then be an exclave of the Main-Kinzig district with no connection to the rest of the district.

The water quality of the lake is, together with that of the lake Freigericht-Ost opposite the federal highway 8 on the Bavarian side, the best of the lakes of the Kahler Seenplatte .
