History and origin of the place name

Old half-timbered house in Altenhaßlau

The municipality of Linsengericht was founded on September 1, 1970 as part of the regional reform in Hesse through the voluntary amalgamation of the four previously independent municipalities Altenhaßlau, Eidengesäß, Geislitz and Großenhausen. On December 31, 1971, Kirchberg, Metze and Wichdorf were added by incorporation . On December 31, 1971, Lützelhausen also joined the new community.

Birkenhain was initially discussed as a possible name for the larger community . The Hessian state authorities found that the name Linsengericht was historically more appropriate. The parish does not refer to a meal with lentils, but to the location of a dish .

The above-mentioned five municipalities of the Altenhaßlau court are closely linked by their location and history. The court, which is also known under the name Linsengericht, is first mentioned in a document dated September 20, 1240. Various explanations are known for the origin of the name Linsengericht: The name could represent a change from "Lindengericht" (place of jurisdiction under a linden tree ). With regard to this so-called “free court” there is also another interpretation: It is reported that the case law of this free court has not deviated from the law by any amount. According to another interpretation, the name is said to have originated from the fact that in earlier times a lot of lentils were grown in the districts of the judicial community. Field names still existing today (Linsenacker, Linsenrain, Linsengraben) indicate the correctness of this assumption.

Originally the “Hasela” dish was a free imperial property and was only subject to the emperor. In the 13th century the area belonged to the dominion of the diocese of Würzburg . By the then bishop who received the Knights of Trimberg the court to fief . So gradually the rights and freedoms of the court residents, apart from the court forest, were lost to the Lords of Trimberg, then to those of Eppstein and von Hanau . The lower jurisdiction exercised the freely elected tithe count on the court in Altenhaßlau.

The Thirty Years' War brought great misery for the villages of the Altenhaßlau court. According to a directory from 1632, i.e. before the worst years of the war, there were 43 houses in Eidengesäß, 32 in Geislitz with Hof Eich and Eichermühle, 30 in Altenhaßlau, 22 in Großenhausen and 14 in Lützelhausen. The population is given with a total of 141 married couples. The villages suffered the greatest losses in 1634/35, so that after the end of the war in 1648 only 14 families lived here.

The demarcation of the individual villages has gradually peeled out of the old judicial district " Zent- Hasela" over the centuries . Initially, the village marks were separated from the fields, corridors, meadows, pastures and forests by protective fences. The area outside the village brands was common land , as is the case with the court forest to this day. The extent of the parish Altenhaßlau still matches that of the old judicial district and the Märkergenossenschaft "Haselau".
