Location of the town of Steinau an der Strasse in the Main-Kinzig district | ||
Steinau an der Strasse is located in the Main-Kinzig district in the southeast of the state of Hesse . The addition "on the street" refers to the Via Regia , the old trade route from Frankfurt am Main to Leipzig , and serves to distinguish it from other places of the same name. Steinau is also called the Brothers Grimm City because they spent part of their youth here.
geography
location
Steinau is embedded in the Kinzig valley on the Kinzig between the Spessart in the south and the Vogelsberg in the north at an altitude of 175 m above sea level , about 6.5 km southwest of Schlüchtern .
geology
The location between the Spessart and its sandstone formations and the volcanically shaped Vogelsberg with its fertile weathered soils divides the district of Steinau: In the south it is characterized by forests and in the north by agriculture .
One of the two stalactite caves in Hesse, the Devil's Cave, is located north of downtown Steinau . The cave, which is around 2.5 million years old, has been opened up since 1905. Due to its large karst cavity in the lower shell limestone , it represents an important geological natural monument.
Neighboring communities
Steinau borders in the north on the municipality of Freiensteinau ( Vogelsbergkreis ), the municipalities of Neuhof and Flieden (both in the district of Fulda ), in the east on the city of Schlüchtern , in the south on the non- parish Spessart area , which surrounds the Marjoss district, and in the west on the city Bad Soden-Salmünster and the community of Birstein .
City structure
Steinau consists of the districts of Bellings , Hintersteinau , Marborn , Marjoss , Neustall , Sarrod , Rabenstein , Rebsdorf , Seidenroth , the core town of Steinau, Uerzell (with the settlement of Klesberg ) and Ulmbach .
history
middle Ages
In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, Steinau was an important stop on the Via Regia, the old trade route between the exhibition centers of Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig.
It originally belonged to the County of Rieneck . The dispute between the Archbishops of Mainz and the Counts of Rieneck in the second half of the 13th century for power in western Spessart ended in 1271 with a victory for the Archbishop of Mainz, Werner von Eppstein . Part of the peace agreement was that Countess Elisabeth von Rieneck , with a rich trousseau , to which the town of Steinau an der Straße belonged, was married to Ulrich I , von Hanau , an ally of the Archbishop of Mainz. This is how Steinau came to rule and later the county of Hanau . Ulrich I then ensured that Steinau received town charter , namely that of Gelnhausen , on July 4, 1290 - as the second town of his rule, after the Windecken residence and before Hanau . In 1339 the Archbishopric of Mainz claimed the city as a dilapidated fiefdom , but could not prevail. At an unknown time, Steinau was given to the Fulda monastery as a fief; the oldest surviving fiefdom letter about the castle and town of Steinau dates from 1442.
The town of Steinau was the main town of the Steinau office of the same name in the Hanau lordship and county. After the county of Hanau was divided in 1458, Steinau belonged to the county of Hanau-Munzenberg and was the main town of its "Upper County ".
With Steinau Castle, of which the square stump of the keep from the 13th century has been preserved, the Lords of Hanau built a fortification that served to secure the escort on the Via Regia. The castle was expanded to become Steinau Castle , which later often served as the widow's seat of the Hanau Countesses. Philipp Grimm , father of the brothers Grimm was here in the 18th century bailiff , so managing director of the Office Steinau and had his residential and official residence in the administration building , now a museum.
In 1319 the branch church in Steinau was handed over to the collegiate monastery of Salmünster by the abbot of Fulda monastery , and in 1324 a parish priest was mentioned in Steinau.

- Steinahe (1304)
- Steyna on the road to Fulde (1339)
- Stena (1361)

Modern times
The County of Hanau-Münzenberg initially joined the Lutheran denomination during the Reformation , and was reformed from 1597 . With the death of the last Hanau count, Johann Reinhard III. , 1736, Steinau fell - together with the entire county of Hanau-Münzenberg - to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel , from which the Electorate of Hesse emerged at the beginning of the 19th century . During the Napoleonic period, Steinau was under French military administration from 1806, belonged to the Principality of Hanau from 1807 to 1810 and then from 1810 to 1813 to the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt , Hanau Department . Then it fell back to the Electorate of Hesse. There, with the administrative reform of the Electorate of Hesse in 1821, in which the Electorate of Hesse was divided into four provinces and 22 districts, the city was added to the newly formed district of Schlüchtern . In 1866 the electorate - and with it Steinau - was annexed by Prussia after the German-Austrian War .
After the Second World War Steinau was in the American zone of occupation. It became part of the state of Hesse and, with the territorial reform of 1974, part of the Main-Kinzig district .
On January 1, 1978, the municipality was officially renamed Steinau an der Strasse .

mayor
Mayor Walter Strauch (SPD), who has been in office since 2002, was re-elected on January 27, 2008 in the first ballot with 61.3% of the vote. The turnout was 67.4%. The incumbent did not run for the mayoral election in 2014. There Alexander Link (SPD), Mathias Lifka (CDU) and Malte Jörg Uffeln (independent) faced each other. Uffeln finally prevailed in the second ballot with 59.15% of the votes against Alexander Link (SPD) and has been mayor since August 1, 2014.
On June 13, 2017, the city council decided to initiate a voting procedure against the incumbent mayor Malte Jörg Uffeln. The reason for this are Nazi allegations in connection with a book present and a highly controversial dedication. As a disciplinary order, the Main-Kinzig-Kreis imposed a fine of 1,000 euros on Malte Jörg Uffeln on September 8, 2017. The voting process failed due to a rejection by 66.6% of voters on September 24, 2017, so that Malte Jörg Uffeln remains in office.

coat of arms
Blazon : “ Standing in blue on a green shield background, a white-clad, gold-haired, gold-crowned and silver-emblazoned woman, protruding from below the crown on the left, carrying a shawl-like narrow red cloth up to the waist, in the right outstretched open hand a six-spoke gold wagon wheel, in the left a silver sword holding, the point touching the ground, on the right accompanied by a little sign, in it three red rafters in gold, on the left by five five-pointed golden stars placed in wave stakes. "
Declaration of coat of arms: The coat of arms shows the patron saint of the city, St. Catherine . She is considered the patroness of Wagner, millers, virgins, girls, students, pupils, librarians and scholars, but also of potters (Steinau was an important pottery place since the Middle Ages). In her hands she holds a wheel and a sword, the tools of her martyrdom. In most of the depictions of St. Catherine, the wheel is broken, but not in the Steinauer coat of arms. The small coat of arms is that of the Counts of Hanau , whose lands Steinau belonged to for a long time, at times even being the seat of the Upper Counties and, for a short time, the Hanau residence. The meaning of the five stars is unknown.
