Reinhard Church (2012)

The Reinhard Church in Steinau an der Strasse was built in the years 1725–1731 as a church for the Lutheran minority in the "Upper County " of the County of Hanau-Münzenberg .

The architect of the church, which is located on Ziegelgasse in the historic old town, was the Count's builder Christian Ludwig Hermann . It is the oldest and largest of a series of transverse churches that were established in the majority Reformed county for the Lutheran minority during this period. Before construction began, the resistance of the mostly Reformed population in Steinau had to be overcome, whose rights were secured by the main religious recession of 1670: Construction was only possible in the suburbs.

The foundation stone was laid by the ruling count, Johann Reinhard III. , laid in August 1725. Christian Ludwig Hermann designed a representative, plastered hall with sandstone structure. There are oculi above all windows, which are designed as arched windows . In the east there is a staircase, in the west the tower. The main portal is located on the southern long side in a rectangular porch. Inside, the room is oriented transversely and contains curved, partly two-story galleries . The pulpit is located on the north long side above the altar . The inauguration took place on September 9, 1731.

Reinhard Church in the local area

The church had a significant influence on a number of new church buildings in the region during this period. B. the Evangelical parish church Langenselbold , in Niederrodenbach or in (Bad) Nauheim .

In the course of the Hanau Union of 1818, the Calvinist and Lutheran congregations in all places of the former County of Hanau-Münzenberg were merged. In order to be able to further distinguish the church buildings previously named after the denominations, the "Lutheran Church" was now named " Reinhardskirche " after the former sovereign of the County of Hanau , a common procedure in the County of Hanau-Münzenberg. The Reinhardskirche was only used seasonally and was abandoned from 1929, used as a warehouse and badly damaged on the tower and roof in the Second World War . Since the restoration from 1962 to 1965, the Reinhardskirche has been a parish church again.
