Gerhard Bott (born October 14, 1927 in Hanau ) is a German art historian and historian . He was also the director of various important museums.

Life

Gerhard Bott was born as the son of the Hanau grammar school teacher and local researcher Heinrich Bott and his wife Trudel, born. Hüglin, born. Bott was a student at the High State School in Hanau, served as an air force helper and finally passed his Abitur in 1946 at the Augustiner grammar school in Friedberg . He then studied art history and history at the University of Frankfurt am Main . He finished this in 1950 with a doctorate on the founding of cities in the Wetterau and in the Kinzigtal . In 1950/51 he was a scientific volunteer at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg and in 1951/52 he received a scholarshipat the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome.

From 1952 to 1956 Bott worked as a curator at the Historical Museum in Frankfurt am Main, then until 1960 as its director. He began the reconstruction of the museum with the wing on the banks of the Main. From 1960 he headed the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt . Here he initiated the Art Nouveau department, integrated Karl Ströher's Pop Art collection , organized exhibitions on contemporary art and was the publisher of the magazine Kunst in Hessen and am Mittelrhein . He was a member of the documenta council at documenta III , the 4th documenta and documenta 5 . In 1971/72 he worked again for art historical research at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, but then returned to Darmstadt.

From 1975 he worked as director of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and as general director of the museums of the city of Cologne. Here he incorporated the Peter Ludwig collection and established the Museum Ludwig . In 1980 he switched to the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg as general director . He retired from this position in 1993. The extension of the Germanic National Museum was built under his leadership.

In 1996 Bott, together with his wife Katharina , oversaw the exhibition Vice versa. German painters in America - American painters in Germany, 1813–1913 in the German Historical Museum in Berlin, where he was also a member of the expert commission from 1976 to 2010. He is married to the art historian Katharina Bott. From 2010 to 2012 he and his wife were urban historians in their native Hanau.

Bott taught at the University of Cologne , the University of Bochum , the University of Bamberg and the University of Klagenfurt and has been honorary professor for art history at the University of Erlangen since 1983 . Gerhard Bott has three sons.
