Jacob Marrel , ach Jakob Morell or Jacob Morell (* 1614 in Frankenthal ; † 1681 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German still life painter who is known as the only student of Georg Flegel .

Life

Jacob Marrel's father of the same name was a lawyer and town clerk in Frankenthal and his father Claude Marrel was a jeweler from France. After the father's death, the family moved to Frankfurt am Main in December 1624, where Marrel became Flegel's only student in 1627. Later, around 1630, he painted and learned for a time in Utrecht with Jan Davidsz , attracted by the development there in the field of still lifes . de Heem , before he received citizenship in Frankfurt in 1651 and Johanna Sybilla Heim (ius), the second wife and widow of Matthäus Merian d. Ä. got married. He taught their daughter Maria Sibylla Merian in painting, drawing and engraving.

Further stays followed in Utrecht, where he led his second student Abraham Mignon around 1660, and in Nuremberg. In 1679 he settled entirely in Frankfurt and died there two years later.

Some of his works are signed with his Latinized name Jacobus Marrellus and the Latin note fecit , which means 'made by hand '.
