Faraid Head ( Scottish Gaelic An Fharaird ) is a small, approximately 2.5 km long peninsula on the north coast of Sutherland in the Scottish Council Area Highlands . It is located about three kilometers north of the hamlet of Balnakeil near Durness .

A small military radar station was built on the headland in the 1950s . The building now serves as a control tower for the air-to-ground firing ranges on Cape Wrath and Garvie Island . On Faraid Head are the largest sand dunes of the British Isles.
