Honor

In addition to a certificate documenting the award, the holder of this award has received an eight-centimeter silver -embossed plaque created by the sculptor Richard Heß since 1988 . On the front of the medal, the namesake is shown in the portrait, looking to the left with the marginal inscription " Johann-Heinrich-Merck Ehrung der Stadt Darmstadt ". Embossed on the back is the Merck quote " You will never be maliciously successful in suppressing the human spirit ". The name of the recipient is engraved on the plaque.

The award ceremony takes place as part of a public event organized by the City of Science Darmstadt. The honor is based on the honor regulations of the city of Darmstadt. The city of Darmstadt is both sponsor and holder of the award. The selection is made by the city's magistrate . An application is not possible. The honor is not endowed and the award does not take place regularly. In addition to the event, there will be press coverage in the local and regional press .

The honor is in memory of the Darmstadt editor and natural scientist Johann Heinrich Merck (1741–1791) and should not be confused with the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize for literary criticism and essay .
