Ilse Langner

Ilse Langner (full name Ilse Edith Helene Langner , married Ilse Bartels , married Ilse Siebert ; born May 21, 1899 in Breslau , † January 16, 1987 in Darmstadt ) was a German writer and journalist.

Life

Ilse Langner was the daughter of Erdmann Langner, a teacher, and his wife Helene. Her first volume of poetry ( Tautropfen ) was published at the age of 14 . She got her first marriage early. She published her first journalistic works in Berlin, including a trip to the Soviet Union in 1928 on behalf of Scherl-Verlag . In the same year she became a member of the PEN Center Germany . In 1929 she married the factory owner Werner Siebert († 1954) in her second marriage.

In 1929 her first drama "Frau Emma fights in the hinterland" appeared, an anti-war play through which she became known. It premiered at the Berlin Theater Unter den Linden. She had her greatest success with the drama "The Saint from USA", which deals with the biography of the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker-Eddy . The first performance by Max Reinhardt in 1931 at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm drew her wide attention. In 1933 she made a trip around the world, which also took her to the countries of Southeast Asia. She processed her experiences in an extensive travel prose, which she also published in the Frankfurter Hefte after the Second World War . Your pacifist pieces were not allowed to be performed during the National Socialist era . Her Beijing novel Die purple Stadt was published in 1937 and was banned soon after publication, although it was reprinted in 1944 by Suhrkamp Verlag . In 1949 she wrote seven dramas within three months, including Heimkehr , which Erwin Piscator wanted to direct in New York. After he was suspected in the USA of being close to communism, he returned to Germany and published it as a radio play in 1952 .

In 1952 Ilse Langner became a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . In 1963 she moved to Darmstadt. She made further trips, including to Japan, Thailand and Indonesia as well as a lecture tour around the world in 1966/1967 on behalf of the Goethe Institute . In 1968 she represented German writers in Mexico at the Culture Olympiad . In 1975 she also toured Africa.

Her estate is in the German Literature Archive in Marbach .

Ilse Langner was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: III F 198).

Honors

In Darmstadt's Paulusviertel a square was named after Ilse Langner.
