In the same year, the then Minister of Education, Erwin Stein, donated the Goethe plaque as an award from the Hessian Ministry of Culture. It was the very first state award after 1945.

The plaque is made of bronze and was designed by the sculptor Robert Bednorz . On the front side it shows a head portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The back is a symbolized flying eagle. The badge is presented in a box together with a certificate.

The plaque is to be awarded to people of public or cultural life who have promoted and shaped art and culture beyond the requirements of their profession and who have made a special contribution to the cultural development of the State of Hesse through their life's work. The bearers of the Goethe plaque are named by the Hessian Minister for Science and Art.
