Egon Schallmayer (born September 30, 1951 in Rödermark ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

After an apprenticeship as a banker, Schallmayer studied from 1973 to 1979 at the University of Frankfurt am Main the subjects of history and culture of the Roman provinces (provincial Roman archeology), prehistory and early history , medieval history and German studies . In 1979 he was with the work of the Roman Dieburg and his burial doctorate . From 1979 to 1995 he worked as a curator in the Archaeological Preservation Department of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office in Karlsruhe . Most recently he was here as senior curator for the archaeological preservation of monuments in the Karlsruhe district.

From 1995, Schallmayer was director of the Saalburg Museum in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe and from 2001 to 2013 he was also a state archaeologist for the state of Hesse . From 1996 to 2002 he was chairman of the West and South German Association for Ancient Studies. In 2003 he became a founding member and later deputy chairman of the German Limes Commission . Since 2003 he has also been the deputy chairman of the Association of State Archaeologists , co-editor of the journal Archeology in Germany and publisher of the Saalburg yearbook as well as the reports from Hesse and other series and individual publications of Hesse ARCHAEOLOGY. After teaching positions at the universities of Heidelberg, Frankfurt am Main and Marburg, he has been an honorary professor at the University of Cologne since 2001 . Schallmayer is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse .

Schallmayer is considered one of the most internationally renowned experts in the field of Limes research . After his appointment as head of the Saalburg Museum, he reorganized the museum and, since taking over the state archeology, the Hessian archaeological monument preservation under the brand hessenARCHEOLOGIE. Under his aegis, the Celtic World on Glauberg was created with the new construction of the Celtic Museum. He was involved in the creation of the Hesse limit development plan. In 1985 he was the first to be awarded the Eduard Anthes Prize . In 2005 he received the “ Saalburg Prize for the preservation of history and homeland of the Hochtaunuskreis ” for his achievements in the field of local research in Hessen , which he regards as an important field of activity in addition to his actual work . In 2011, the state of Hesse recognized his special commitment in the above-mentioned fields of work with the Goethe badge.

In mid-June 2013, Schallmayer retired. On the occasion of his 65th birthday, over 30 colleagues dedicated a commemorative publication to Egon Schallmayer with articles on their current research.
