State archaeologists are employees appointed by the monument offices of the federal states of Germany . They are organized nationwide in the Association of State Archaeologists . Since North Rhine-Westphalia is divided into three equal-ranking landscape associations, there are currently 18 state archaeologists for 16 federal states, including two women. Apart from Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony, where they are presided over by a president, the state archaeologists are the highest state authorities in state archeology and soil conservation .
