Franz Schopper

Franz Schopper (* 1964 in Mallersdorf ) is a German prehistorian and medieval archaeologist . He is currently the state archaeologist of Brandenburg .

Life

Franz Schopper studied prehistory and early history at the University of Regensburg and the University of Dublin . After completing his studies, he became the area officer in the Department of Soil Monument Preservation in the Upper Palatinate administrative district . He then became excavation manager at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation and also a research assistant at the Gäuboden Museum in Straubing . In 1997 Schopper moved to Brandenburg. He became head of the Frankfurt (Oder) branch and of the Uckermark-Barnim-Oderland land preservation department of the Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation and the State Archaeological Museum . In 1999 and 2000 he lectured at the European University Viadrina , in 2000 and from 2006/07 at the Humboldt University in Berlin and in 2005 at the Free University of Berlin . Since July 1, 2004, Schopper has succeeded Jürgen Kunow as the state archaeologist of the state of Brandenburg and museum director of the Brandenburg state archaeological museum and thus also deputy director of the Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation and the State Archaeological Museum. In September 2006 Franz Schopper was appointed museum director and professor by the minister responsible at the time, Johanna Wanka . Since July 1, 2012 he has been director of the state office and the state museum as well as state archaeologist. He was appointed to his post on August 31 by the Brandenburg Minister for Science, Research and Culture, Sabine Kunst . In the summer of 2014 he was appointed honorary professor for prehistoric archeology at the Free University of Berlin .

Schopper is well versed in both prehistory and early history; he is particularly a specialist in the Bronze Age . He is regarded as a specialist in bronze and iron age research in the Oder region . In 2003 he discovered a late Bronze Age bronze place with 105 individual pieces on the Schlossberg von Lebus . The research projects initiated, led and supported by him span the broad spectrum of state archeology. In addition to Slavic archeology, research into medieval settlements is the current focus, particularly on the completely excavated village structures of Diepensee ( Dahme-Spreewald district ) and Horno ( Spree-Neisse district ). He devotes himself to communicating the results in extensive publication and editing activities, exhibition and museum work as well as teaching assignments at several universities: Viadrina University Frankfurt (Oder), Humboldt University Berlin, Free University Berlin.
