The Apoyeque volcanic complex is located on the Chiltepe peninsula, which extends into the southern part of Lake Managua in Nicaragua .
The peninsula is part of the pyroclastic shield volcano Chiltepe , one of the three large ignimbrite shield volcanoes of the Nicaraguan volcanic chain. Inside the Apoyeque there is a caldera filled with a crater lake with a diameter of 2.8 kilometers and a depth of 400 meters. Immediately south-east of the volcano is the Xiloá maar, which is filled with a lakewith an extension of 2.5 by 3 kilometers. The Talpetatl lava dome was created between Laguna Xiloá and Lake Managua. 6,100 years ago, pyroclastic currents with a volume of 1.9 cubic kilometers were ejected in the area of Laguna Xiloá, covering a wide area. Another powerful eruption occurred around 50 BC. With the ejection of about 18 cubic kilometers of tephra .
