The Central American crater lake Xiloá is located 18 km northwest of Managua next to the volcanic complex of Apoyeque on the Chiltepe peninsula, which protrudes into the large Managua Lake . The lake fills a maar that was created by volcanic water vapor explosions .

The water of the lake is slightly salty. The southeastern shore of the lake is sandy and gently sloping into the depths, while the rest of the lake has mostly steep, rocky shores. The visibility under water is two to five meters and depends on the weather.

fauna

The lake is home to four endemic cichlids from the Amphilophus genus , which are only found here and form a monophyletic swarm of species ( A. amarillo , A. sagittae , A. viridis and A. xiloaensis ). The small cichlid species Amatitlania siquia and Neetroplus nematopus , the very large cichlid species Parachromis dovii (72 cm) and Parachromis managuensis (55 cm), a sleeper goby of the genus Gobiomorus and the freshwater herring Dorosoma chavesi also live here .
