Georg Breitner

Georg Breitner (born June 18, 1968 in Wiesbaden ) is a German archaeologist and monument conservator .

Life

Breitner studied classical archeology , Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History , Pre- and Early History, at the University of Mainz and was there in 2005 in the Department of History and Cultural Studies with a thesis on Late Antique mythological statuary doctorate . From 2006 to 2008 he was the scientific director of various city excavations at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier as well as the director of a medieval city excavation in Halle / Saale. From 2009 to 2018 he was the scientific director of the plan archive of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, from 2013 also scientific advisor and head of the UNESCO World Heritage department of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE). Since December 2018, he has succeeded Josef Baulig as head of the State Monuments Office in Saarland, and has been the state curator and state archaeologist of Saarland. In 2019 he campaigned for the preservation of the north portal of the early Gothic abbey church of St. Mauritius in Tholey.

Georg Breitner has been a board member of the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection since 2009. V. (Regional Association Trier) and since 2019 board member of the Institute for Stone Conservation e. V.
