The task of the association is to exchange experiences on the activities, problems and standards of archaeological monument preservation as well as to coordinate and represent common interests to the outside world, in particular to accompany and advise on the ordinance and legislative procedures relating to the field of activity. The board of the association represents the interests of archaeological monument preservation in various committees, for example in the German National Committee for Monument Protection (DNK) and in the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Culture of the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK).

The association holds annual conferences under the leadership of a federal state, which include a general meeting, working groups and a colloquium with invited experts. In addition, eight permanent working groups deal with archaeological information systems, the problem of robbery excavations and the involvement of schools in the archaeological field of activity, the handling of archaeological monuments in agricultural and forestry areas and the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive.

In addition to the reports on the annual meetings, the association publishes guidelines and instructions for archaeological work. He also publishes the bimonthly journal Archeology in Germany with a circulation of around 15,000 copies.

In addition, the association carries out training to become a certified excavation technician. A completed vocational training is required to take part.
