Udo Recker

Udo Recker (born March 20, 1967 in Linnich ) is a German medieval archaeologist and state archaeologist for the state of Hesse .

Life and career

In 1988/89, Udo Recker did community service at the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation (today: LVR Office for Monument Preservation in the Rhineland), Niederzier-Hambach branch (today: Titz branch). During this time he took part in various archaeological excavations in the Rhenish lignite mining area. After completing his community service, he studied prehistory and early history , historical geography and folklore at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms- Universität Bonn and at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Between 1991 and 1996 he was involved in excavations by the Commission for General and Comparative Archeology (KAVA) of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Sri Lanka . Under the direction of Klaus Kilian, he first worked in Pidurangala, Central Province, then until 1993 under Hans-Joachim Weißhaar in Tissamaharama , Southern Province. In 1994, under Helmut Roth , he took over the local direction of a joint project between KAVA and the Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology at the University of Bonn in Godavaya, Southern Province. At the end of the 1996 spring campaign, he resigned from the project management.

At the same time, Recker completed his master's thesis in 1995, which focused on the chronological and stylistic analysis of Rhenish ceramics from the Middle Ages and the early modern period from a settlement excavation in Lohn , Eschweiler , Aachen region . The work was financially supported by the Foundation for the Promotion of Archeology in the Rhenish Brown Coal District. Building on this, the foundation also funded a three-year project to process the former Lohn parish at the University of Bonn. As one of a total of three researchers, Recker presented the results of his research as a dissertation and was awarded the title “The medieval parish wages. Studies on the archaeological and archival legacies of the main town of Lohn ”, PhD in 1999 under Helmut Roth.

In the same year, Recker moved from the University of Bonn to the Westphalian Museum of Archeology / Office for Monument Preservation in Münster , where he started a traineeship in the specialist department Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times. From 2000 to 2002, Recker was head of the archeology department and deputy director of the Institute of the Commission for State Archaeological Research in Hesse , based in Wiesbaden. With the incorporation of the Institute of the Commission for State Archaeological Research in Hesse into the Department of Archaeological and Paleontological Monument Preservation of the State Office for Monument Preservation Hesse in 2003, Recker, as a district archaeologist, took over responsibility for the city and district of Gießen , the cities of Bad Homburg vd Höhe , Oberursel and the Hochtaunuskreis and the Main-Taunus-Kreis . Since 2012 he has been deputy state archaeologist for the state of Hesse and after Egon Schallmayer's early retirement in 2013, he was provisional head of Hesse's ARCHAEOLOGY.

Recker has been a state archaeologist for the state of Hesse since 2016 and has also been deputy head of the State Office for the Preservation of Hesse since 2018 .

Focus of work

Recker has initiated and carried out numerous excavations in Hessen in recent years. In addition, he was repeatedly involved in research projects with third parties or carried out his own projects. These include, for example, his excavations of a high medieval glassworks in Reinhardswald in northern Hesse as well as the investigation of the Baumkirchen desert in the district of Gießen. His focus is on settlement and economic archeology of the Middle Ages and modern times, archeology of the 20th century and cultural landscape research.
