Tissamaharama ( Sinhala තිස්සමහාරාමය ˈtissəmaˌhaːˈraːməjə ) is a small town in southeastern Sri Lanka . It was since the 3rd century BC. Capital of the Sinhalese kingdom of Ruhuna . Only a few historical buildings have been preserved; the large artificial lake Tissa Wewa , which was part of a sophisticated irrigation system , dates from this period. Today the city mainly serves as a starting point for visits to the Yala National Park and the pilgrimage city of Kataragama .
