The Southern Province (Southern Province) of the South Asian country Sri Lanka is a small geographic area that the districts Galle , Matara and Hambantota comprises. The region is economically less developed than the Western Province . The main sources of income are tourism, agriculture and fishing.

Higher educated residents have slowly migrated to the capital Colombo , hampering industrial development.

Important natural beauty are the Yala and Udawalawe - National Park . Cultural sights include the holy city of Kataragama and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama, Kirinda and Galle , which has one of the most impressive monuments of the colonial era with its fortress built by the Dutch.

Further south is the small fishing village of Dickwella . Dickwella is slowly recovering from the severe aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami . The place has a healthy infrastructure, there are several hotels and nice guest houses. From here you can see some sights, such as B. visit the highest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, as well as the famous "Blow Hole".

Hikkaduwa , about 20 km northwest of Galle, is of particular importance for tourism : It is one of the main points of contact for backpackers in Sri Lanka. There are a few hotel complexes for package travelers , but the large number of individual travelers and long-term tourists ensures the appropriate infrastructure in the village: A wide range of hotels and inns, small supermarkets, restaurants, internet cafés , diving schools , travel agencies, souvenir shops and beach bars provide for example. In the urban area of Dondra is the Dondra Head , the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.

Culture

During the Portuguese colonial period there were two famous Sinhalese poets named Andare from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona from Denipitiya; they wrote poems about ordinary people, which, given the centuries of domination of the country's literature by the Buddhist clergy , represented a decisive step towards modern literature.

Also in the province are the Holy City of Kataragama and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama , Kirinda and Galle .
