Unwawatuna is a beach town in the Galle District , Southern Province , on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. The place is about 6 km south of the next bigger city Galle .
The place, founded by Dutch merchants, was initially primarily a stop for numerous backpackers , but is now used by tourists of all stripes.
During the tsunami on December 26, 2004 , Unawatuna Bay was one of the hardest hit areas on the south coast.
