Leonhard Eißnert (actually Georg Leonhard Eißnert , born June 12, 1866 in Reichenberg (Lower Franconia) ; † March 10, 1949 in Offenbach am Main ) was a Hessian politician ( SPD ), mayor in Offenbach and member of the Hessian state parliament.

Eißnert was the first Social Democratic alderman in a German city.

education and profession

Leonhard Eißnert was born the son of a farmer. After attending elementary school, he trained as a carpenter and worked as a journeyman carpenter until 1897. From 1897 to 1920 he was a cigar dealer in Offenbach.

politics

Eißnert was a member of the SPD. He was a city councilor in Offenbach from 1898 to 1906. In 1906 he was elected the first honorary councilor of the SPD in a major German city. It took more than half a year after the election for Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig Eissnert to confirm that he was in office, as conservative and national liberal circles were storming against Eissner's election. He held this office until he was elected full-time alderman in February 1920.

In 1911 Eißnert was elected to the state parliament of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . From 1919 to 1921 he was a member of the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse . From 1928 to 1932 he was mayor of Offenbach.

Eißnert's work in Offenbach shapes the cityscape to this day: the ring of facilities and the forest park on Bieberer Berg (today: Leonhard-Eißnert-Park) go back to his initiative. In these green lungs , people should be able to recover from the stresses and strains of everyday life in dirty factory halls and musty apartments. He also gave decisive impetus for the residential areas on Isenburg- and Starkenburgring as well as others along the system ring. Even the idea for the Tempelsee settlement is said to go back to Eißnert.
