Helmut Roth (prehistoric)

Helmut Roth (born July 14, 1941 in Berlin , † September 22, 2003 in Bonn ) was a German prehistoric scientist .

After finishing school, Helmut Roth studied prehistory, classical archeology and geology at the University of Würzburg . In 1969 he completed his studies with a doctorate on the ornamentation of the Lombards in Italy . This was followed by university assistantships at the University of Göttingen and the University of Würzburg. In 1966 he became a member of the Göttingen Wingolf in Göttingen . In 1975 he received his habilitation with his thesis on archaeological evidence of early Christianity among the Alemanni and took up a professorship at the University of Marburg . From 1992 he was Professor of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology at the University of Bonn and was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty from 1996 to 2000. Roth was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute as well as numerous other scientific institutions in Germany and abroad.

His central research areas included the archeology and art history of the early Middle Ages , the history of the migration period as well as social, economic and commercial history. His last projects included excavations by the University of Bonn in Mongolia , Nepal and Sri Lanka as well as the evaluation of the early medieval grave field of Weingarten .
