The March 20 is the 79th day of the Gregorian calendar (80th in leap years ), thus remain 286 days by year end. The spring equinox takes place on March 20 or 21 . In the Iranian calendar , March 21st is usually New Year's Day (but sometimes March 20th or 22nd).

  • 1731 : The Italian city of Foggia is partially destroyed by an earthquake. There are about 2,000 dead.
  • 1760 : The “Great Fire of Boston ” destroys 349 buildings, about a tenth of the city.
  • 1861 : An earthquake destroys the western Argentine city of Mendoza . An estimated 6,000 deaths, around a third of the population, are to be mourned.
  • 1912 : The passenger liner Koombana is sunk by a cyclone on the coast of the Australian state of Western Australia . All 138 people on board die.
