Carsten Ramelow [ ˈkaʁstn̩ ˈʁaməlo ] (born March 20, 1974 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer player .
Career
Ramelow had his first big success as a 19-year-old amateur at Hertha BSC . In his first senior season at Hertha, he only made three appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga , but made the DFB Cup final with the Hertha amateurs against Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen (final score: 0: 1). This brought him into the spotlight of German football for the first time. In the following season he became a regular player for Hertha in the 2nd Bundesliga. In 1995 he moved to Bayer Leverkusen and matured to become a national player in defensive midfield.
By the end of his career, Ramelow played 333 times in the 1st Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen and scored 22 goals. He didn't win a title. He was four times German runner-up and twice German runner-up cup winner. In the Champions League he reached the final against Real Madrid in 2002 and lost 2-1.
With the national team he was runner- up at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . Just before the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , Ramelow resigned from the national team. By this time he had completed 46 internationals.
After Jens Nowotny was seriously injured , Ramelow was named the new captain of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, but he was less and less involved. In March 2008 he announced his retirement from active football, but continued to train with the team until the end of the season and would have been available as a professional in the event of staff shortages.
In August 2008, Ulf Kirsten , coach of the Leverkusen regional league team, brought him back three months after retiring as a professional footballer. He was supposed to give Bayer Leverkusen's second team stability as a leader, but had to end his career on October 24, 2008 because his knee problems had not improved.
Others
Ramelow recorded his own CD with three pieces of music in July 2004 and supported a social institution in his place of residence in Kürten in the Bergisches Land with the sale .
He is Vice President of the Association of Contract Footballers .
