Family and personal
Scholl is the son of a Turkish father and a German mother. After the divorce, his mother married a second time. She and her son adopted the new family name Scholl. Mehmet Scholl is a cousin of the comic artist Jan-Michael Richter . From his first marriage he has the son Lucas, who played for a long time in the youth teams of FC Bayern Munich, sometimes with his father as a coach. He later played in the second team of FC Bayern in the fourth-class Regional League Bayern and at the beginning of 2017 moved to the fourth-class club Wacker Nordhausen in the Regionalliga Nordost . Mehmet Scholl first married Susanne Pfannendörfer in 1993, the marriage lasted until 1996. In 2007 he married his long-time partner Jessica, with whom he has two daughters. At the end of 2016, the couple separated.
In Karlsruhe, Scholl passed the Abitur at the Neureut grammar school . With his Karlsruher Sportkegel team, he was the German Vice Junior Champion; later he also played bowling as a sport, also in the 1st team of the sport bowling department of FC Bayern Munich .
Player career
Club career
Mehmet Scholl began his professional career in 1989 at Karlsruher SC . In 1992 he was signed by the German record champions FC Bayern Munich , where he was the longest-serving professional and most successful professional in the team when he left in 2007.
Beginning in Karlsruhe
He began his football career at SV Nordwest Karlsruhe. A year after his former teammate Michael Sternkopf , he also moved to the C-youth team of Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC. In April 1990 he made the leap into professional business there, debuting against 1. FC Köln with a goal in the Bundesliga. In his first three Bundesliga years at KSC, his talent as a technically adept midfielder quickly became apparent, so that in 1992 Bayern Munich successfully competed for Scholl.
FC Bayern
Scholl quickly asserted himself at Bayern, with 31 appearances in the Bundesliga in his first season. At the same time he was highlighted as a teen idol in the media.
With FC Bayern he was eight times German champion . He held this record of the German football history from 2006 first alone until his former teammate Oliver Kahn , Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm , the brand with the championships in 2008 and 2015 and in 2017 also reached. Scholl won the DFB and League Cup five times with FC Bayern . In 1996 he won the UEFA Cup . 2001 - the highlight of his club career (although he missed a penalty in this game) - he was Champions League winner in the final against FC Valencia . In the game for the World Cup in Tokyo in the autumn of the same year (1-0 after extra time against Boca Juniors from Argentina) he was absent due to injury. In total, he played 88 games in European club competitions, in which he was able to achieve 18 goals.
Scholl suffered from many injuries, some of them serious, during his playing career. On May 19, 2007, the 34th matchday, he ended his Bundesliga career with a 5-2 win for Bayern against 1. FSV Mainz 05 with his goal to make it 2-0. On August 15, 2007, Scholl's farewell game against FC Barcelona took place in the Allianz Arena , which was also the first encounter of the Franz Beckenbauer Cup. FC Barcelona won 1-0. On the same evening, Scholl was made an honorary player for FC Bayern Munich and gave his number 7 shirt to the Frenchman Franck Ribéry .
In the period before he left professional football, Mehmet Scholl was portrayed by the two filmmakers Ferdinand Neumayr and Eduard Augustin . With the documentary Free: Played - Mehmet Scholl: Beyond the game , they set him a filmic monument.
National player
In 1995 he became a national player , a year later he won the 1996 European Football Championship with Germany in England. There he was not a regular player, but was used three times from the start: in the quarter- and semi-finals and finally in the final. In the final against the Czech Republic, when the score was 0: 1 for the Czech Republic, he was substituted in the 69th minute by Oliver Bierhoff , who then equalized and scored the golden goal in extra time .
Mehmet Scholl had a difficult position with the then national coach Berti Vogts , so that despite good performances in the league he was not nominated for the 1998 World Cup in France.
He also took part in the 2000 European Championship , where he scored the only goal of the German national team in the first group game in a 1-1 draw against Romania. Around the year 2000 he was considered one of the best and most creative midfielders in the world.
On April 23, 2002, shortly before the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , his poor health prompted him to resign as a national player. Despite his successes, Scholl never took part in a world championship final.

After the playing career
Sports commentator and presenter
In March 2008, ARD engaged Mehmet Scholl, who was already known as a player for his “pithy sayings”, as an expert for the European Football Championship . At the side of Reinhold Beckmann, he commented and analyzed games on TV broadcasts. After the 2010 World Cup , he inherited Günter Netzer as an expert. In November 2011, ARD decided to continue working with Scholl until the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. After that, the contract was extended twice, it ran until the 2018 World Cup . On August 10, 2017, Scholl and ARD terminated their contract. Since Scholl was absent from the two semi-finals of the Confed Cup , there have been reports about the reasons. In his program "Mehmets Schollplatten" on Bayerischer Rundfunk, he said that he should talk about doping before the games. He said, “I want this story to stay out for this beautiful day. They said she wasn't staying outside and I wasn't allowed to interfere in the program. So I said: I'm going. And then I left. ”This action is accepted by the media as a reason to terminate the contract.
Scholl caused controversy several times in his work as an ARD expert. During the Euro 2012 he said about what he considered to be a passive striker Mario Gómez : "In between I was afraid that he was sore and had to be turned around". Scholl later apologized for this statement.
As an indie rock fan, he initially only presented "Mehmets Schollplatten" together with Achim Bogdahn in the Zündfunk -Nachtmix on Bayern 2 on the first Friday of the month until June 2012 and gave his professional commitment as a trainer as a reason to leave. Since February 2014 he has been moderating the program again, which is normally broadcast every first Sunday of the month from 11:05 p.m. to midnight. In 2011 he founded the music label Millaphon Records together with Till Hofmann and Gerd Baumann .
Trainer

In the spring of 2008, Scholl completed a trainer training course to acquire the B license . From October 21, 2008 he coached the U13 juniors of FC Bayern Munich, where his son also played.
On April 27, 2009, Scholl took over the post as interim coach of the club's second team, as Hermann Gerland was temporarily assistant coach of the first team. Since Gerland remained active as assistant coach of the first team in the 2009/10 season, Scholl continued to look after the third division team. For this, however, a license as a football teacher is required from the DFB . FC Bayern had to pay a penalty of an unknown amount because Scholl was explicitly not hired as team boss, but as coach.
He completed his trainer training to acquire the A license at the end of 2009 in Oberhaching.
In April 2010, Scholl announced that he would give up his coaching activity at Bayern Munich at the end of the 2009/10 season and leave the club after a total of 18 years in order to concentrate on his TV career.
In March 2012, he completed the DFB's football teacher training course and received the UEFA Pro license . At the beginning of the 2012/2013 season, Scholl took over again as coach of the second team at FC Bayern Munich. On January 25, 2013, he announced his departure as coach of the Bayern amateurs at the end of the season due to the conflict of interest with his work as a TV commentator. Previously, the management of FC Bayern had repeatedly criticized Scholl's television commitment.
