Borussia Dortmund was the first in the 2001/02 season of the Bundesliga and thus German men's championship . The season started on July 28, 2001 and ended on May 4, 2002.
Season overview
The 2001/02 Bundesliga season shaped the image of Bayer 04 Leverkusen's eternal runner-up like no other . After the 31st matchday, Leverkusen had five points ahead of the table as leaders. They had also reached the final of the DFB Cup and the Champions League and were facing a possible triple triumph.
In the Bundesliga, Leverkusen lost their home game against Werder Bremen 2-1 on matchday 32, and on matchday 33, the game was also lost at 1. FC Nürnberg , which was threatened with relegation , this time 0-1. Leverkusen also lost the championship lead to Borussia Dortmund , which won a highly dramatic game at HSV 4: 3. The Dortmund team defended their top position on the last matchday with coach Matthias Sammer and won against Bremen 2-1. Leverkusen's 2-1 win against Hertha BSC was no longer enough for the title.
Leverkusen then also lost the two finals in the cup competitions, the DFB Cup final with 2: 4 against FC Schalke 04, the final of the Champions League with 1: 2 against Real Madrid . The Leverkusen players Michael Ballack , Hans Jörg Butt , Oliver Neuville , Carsten Ramelow and Bernd Schneider also failed in the final against Brazil at the World Cup with Germany in May and June 2002 and had to accept second place in a competition four times in one season . Only Lúcio from Leverkusen won a title by participating in the World Cup with Brazil.
FC Bayern Munich , German champions in each of the three previous years, only finished third in the league, but won the World Cup in November 2001 .
In addition to Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC, the sixth team in the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen, qualified for the UEFA Cup , as the two finalists in the DFB Cup had already qualified for the European Cup via the Bundesliga table.
The 1. FC Kaiserslautern , who had taken care of at the beginning of the season with seven wins in the first seven matchdays sensation, did not qualify for a European cup competition.
The relegation battle was decided on matchday 33, when St. Pauli lost its last chance, Freiburg was defeated in a direct duel in Cologne and the Nuremberg victory meant relegation for Cologne as well.
The strong point difference between the top and the relegation zone was noticeable this season: there have never been five teams with more than 60 points since the introduction of the three-point rule in 1995, 56 points were enough for a place in the UEFA Cup (Kaiserslautern on place 7) not off. On the other hand, Nuremberg and Rostock secured the league stay with 34 points.
