The 2007/08 Bundesliga was the 45th season of the top German division in football . It started on August 10, 2007 with the game of champions VfB Stuttgart against runner-up FC Schalke 04 and ended on May 17, 2008.
The German champions became the record title holder FC Bayern Munich , who already won the 21st championship mathematically with a goalless draw in Wolfsburg on matchday 31 . Bayern had previously won the DFB Cup with a 2-1 after extra time in the final against Borussia Dortmund .
1. FC Nürnberg as the reigning cup winner and the two promoted Hansa Rostock and MSV Duisburg had to relegate .
Season course
Championship decision
The German record champions Bayern Munich ultimately confidently secured their twentieth title in the Bundesliga and thus the 21st championship; At the end of the season, they were ten points ahead of runner-up Werder Bremen and the fewest goals conceded to date (21) in the history of the Bundesliga. Bayern, who were leaders from the first day of the season and only experienced a slight phase of weakness towards the end of the first half of the season, benefited from mistakes by their pursuers at the beginning of the second half. Bremen in particular, which was still level on points with Bayern at the winter break, lost contact to the eventual champions in this phase, but was able to maintain its position in second place after a strong season finale. Schalke 04 finished third, two points behind.
The reigning champions from Stuttgart were only able to save themselves in the UI Cup after a disappointing start to the season. Towards the end, Hamburger SV and - somewhat surprisingly - VfL Wolfsburg under the new coach Felix Magath had an easy battle for places in the UEFA Cup Nose ahead. Wolfsburg had finished the first half of the season in eleventh place after numerous newcomers, but reached third place in the second half of the table.
midfield
In the first half of the season, the Karlsruher SC caused a sensation, wintering as a climber in sixth place. After a decent start to the second half of the season, the Baden team fell noticeably in the spring and ended the season as the second-worst team in the second half of the season in eleventh place. Bayer Leverkusen, which was able to keep up with the UEFA Cup places until the middle of the second half of the season, lost a good position in the last games of the season and did not achieve an international starting position for the first time since 2002/03. This led to the dismissal of coach Michael Skibbe .
Borussia Dortmund ended the season on a disappointing 13th place, but was qualified for an international competition for the first time since the 2004/05 season due to reaching the DFB Cup final. Nevertheless, the club split from coach Thomas Doll after the season . The table tenth Hertha BSC received another UEFA Cup starting place through the fair play classification.
Relegation battle
Already at the winter break there were signs that there would be a pentathlon for relegation behind a broad midfield. In addition to the two climbers from Duisburg and Rostock, Energie Cottbus, Arminia Bielefeld and the previous year's cup winners from 1. FC Nürnberg were in a relegation battle for a long time. While Cottbus (after a coach change from Petrik Sander to Bojan Prašnikar ) managed to stay in the league on matchday 33, Arminia Bielefeld ( Michael Frontzeck had replaced Ernst Middendorp in winter) and 1. FC Nuremberg on the last matchday a long-distance duel to stay in the elite class. In the end , after a 2-0 draw against Schalke 04, the Franconians, who had replaced coach Hans Meyer with Thomas von Heesen in February, only left the ungrateful 16th place in the table and the associated seventh relegation to the second division, while Bielefeld was second with a 2 : 2 against last year's champions VfB Stuttgart secured relegation.
