Thomas von Heesen (born October 1, 1961 in Höxter ) is a former German football player and today's coach and functionary .
career
player
As a youth player, von Heesen first played for the DJK football club in his hometown Albaxen , then moved to VfL Höxter and joined 1. FC Paderborn at the age of 17 . In 1980 he was signed by HSV and, like many other HSV young players, did his Abitur at the Heidberg high school in Hamburg-Langenhorn . In his active football career, the midfielder was twice German champion and once DFB Cup winner with Hamburger SV , for whom he played 368 of his 378 Bundesliga games . He celebrated his greatest success with HSV in 1983 when he won the European Champion Clubs' Cup .
In the summer of 1994 von Heesen returned to his East Westphalian homeland and signed with Arminia Bielefeld . The club played in the newly introduced Regionalliga West / Südwest, the third highest division in German football. Arminia Bielefeld was the first in the table to make it to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1994/95 season and the midfielder made an important contribution to this with seven goals in 26 appearances. Here von Heesen and Arminia Bielefeld achieved immediate promotion (“direct march through”) into the Bundesliga. There he scored his 100th Bundesliga goal and ended his playing career on May 31, 1997.
Trainer and functionary
In the 1997/98 season, von Heesen was team manager at Arminia Bielefeld. During the 1998/99 season he took over as head coach from Ernst Middendorp and led the club, which had since been relegated, back to the Bundesliga. After the rise of Arminia, he moved to Hannover 96 as sports director . He only held this office until December 1999. On December 5, 2000 he succeeded Klaus Toppmöller at the second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken . He coached the Saarlanders until August 21, 2001. From September 17, 2001 he was under contract again with Arminia from Bielefeld, this time as sports director. He held this position until 2005, in the meantime he also acted as interim trainer for Arminia from February 17 to March 1, 2004. On May 12, 2005 he finally took over the coaching position at the Bielefeld team and secured relegation on the last two game days of the 2004/05 season. He resigned from this position in February 2007 after Arminia had nine games in a row without a win. Just a few weeks earlier he announced that he wanted to leave the “ Alm ” at the end of the season. After the dismissal of the coach Hans Meyer von Heesen officially became the coach of 1. FC Nürnberg on February 12, 2008 , but could not prevent the relegation of FCN to the 2. Bundesliga. After a moderate start in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2008/09 , he came under fire in Nuremberg, especially from President Michael A. Roth , who accused him of lacking identification with the club. On August 28, 2008 von Heesen announced his resignation. He then took over the Cypriot association Apollon Limassol in September 2008 , where he was dismissed in January 2010 after 16 months due to continued unsuccessfulness.
Since December 2006, von Heesen has had the DFB license as a soccer teacher .
On November 29, 2011, von Heesen became the trainer of Kapfenberger SV in the Austrian Bundesliga and succeeded Werner Gregoritsch . At the winter break, the club was four points behind on the relegation zone. When the gap had grown to nine points three game days before the end of the season and the relegation was practically certain, the contract with the coach was extended until 2015 in order to tackle the rebuilding and promotion to the second-highest division with him, but success with Kapfenberg failed to materialize. After 16 rounds in the first division in the 2012/2013 season, Kapfenberg had only two wins out of seven defeats and seven draws. Kapfenberg was threatened with relegation to the regional league. As a consequence, von Heesen was dismissed as a trainer on November 10, 2012.
In July 2014 von Heesen became deputy chairman of the supervisory board of HSV Fußball AG , to which the professional soccer department of Hamburger SV had previously been spun off. On February 26, 2015, he resigned from the Supervisory Board.
On September 1, 2015, von Heesen became the trainer of Lechia Gdańsk from the Polish Ekstraklasa . He was released there on December 3, 2015.
On March 13, 2018, von Heesen became a sports advisor to the board of HSV Fußball AG, after the chairman of the board, Heribert Bruchhagen, and the director of professional football, Jens Todt, had been released a week earlier .
