Season overview

Scene from the game Hamburger SV - Bayern Munich in autumn 1981

Before the 29th matchday, HSV had three points ahead of Bayern Munich. In this game between FC Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV on April 24, 1982 in Munich, Bayern led 3-1 up to the 68th minute. With this result they would have been only one point behind. Thomas von Heesen and Horst Hrubesch equalized. In the 90th minute Horst Hrubesch again headed a Felix Magath free kick to make it 3: 4. The HSV had a five point lead with up to ten points to be achieved per team.

Bayern won the DFB Cup a week later, but lost the European Cup final against Aston Villa 1-0 and ended up third in the Bundesliga behind the autumn champions 1. FC Köln. Werder Bremen reached fifth place as a newcomer at the beginning of Otto Rehhagel's coaching time .

For the first time since the Bundesliga was founded, foreign referees were used. Due to an agreement between the DFB and the SFV , five referees from Switzerland were used in five Bundesliga games.
