FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1988/89 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
Bayern Munich have been leading the table since the fifth matchday, interrupted twice by Bayer 04 Leverkusen after the 6th and by VfB Stuttgart after the 10th matchday. The only serious competition in the course of the season was 1. FC Köln , who played their best season since the 1977/78 championship under coach Christoph Daum and came up to one point on Bayern after the 29th matchday. This took place after a 2-0 defeat of Munich at the Stuttgarter Kickers. Cologne beat Dortmund 2-0. Then the lead increased again. Cologne only played 2-2 in Hanover, Bayern narrowly won against St. Pauli. The duel between FC Bayern and 1. FC Köln this season was marked by the verbal argument between coaches Christoph Daum and Jupp Heynckes on the part of FC Bayern. On May 20, there was an argument in the current sports studio between Daum, Heynckes and Uli Hoeneß . Hoeneß announced that Daum's journey would end on May 25th. On May 25th there was a real final in Cologne. Up to the 80th minute it was 1: 1. Cologne coach Daum wanted the decision and took Jürgen Kohler off the field. His opponent Roland Wohlfarth scored two goals in the final phase and thus secured Bayern the championship, whose lead had grown to five points two game days before the end of the season.
